ASUS reportedly to release Transformer Pad 300 on April 22nd

Image
The ASUS Transformer Pad 300 is getting closer to bringing its watered-down Prime flavor to store shelves, as PC World reports a spokesperson confirmed it will begin shipping April 22nd. What they could not confirm was the price, although there are preorders out there for $399 already. In case you've forgotten, the 300 brings the same Tegra 3 processor as the Prime, but matches it with a standard IPS display, optional LTE and only 16GB of built-in storage, as well as 10 hours of battery life. We'll let you know when we hear more, but for now feel free to pencil in a note on your Earth Day calendar entries.

Shock Over 'Hunger Games' Directorgate: New Captain Needed Fast!

Which Hollywood heavy-hitter will step in to take helm of 'Catching Fire'?

The big "Hunger Games" news this week wasn't how much cash continued to pour in, but the director who was on his way out. Gary Ross released a statement saying he would not be back for the sequel.

"Despite recent speculation in the media, and after difficult but sincere consideration, I have decided not to direct 'Catching Fire,' " Ross said. "As a writer and a director, I simply don't have the time I need to write and prep the movie I would have wanted to make because of the fixed and tight production schedule. I loved making 'The Hunger Games' — it was the happiest experience of my professional life."

"Hunger Games" studio Lionsgate expressed remorse at Ross' departure. "We're very sorry that Gary Ross has chosen not to direct 'Catching Fire.' We were really looking forward to making the movie with him. He did an incredible job on the first film and we are grateful for his work."

MTV Movies Managing Editor Eric Ditzian thought something was up. "I am frankly surprised he's not coming back, but in retrospect, I could see the implication when he was speaking to us, he was very reluctant to talk about 'Catching Fire,' " Ditzian told the panel on the latest edition of MTV News' "Talk Nerdy."

"Nerdy" host Josh Wigler expressed the need for urgency on the part of Lionsgate to make their hire soon. "Whoever they get to direct 'Fire' needs to have started yesterday. They really need to make this hire pretty fast; production is moving in August."

Who will step in for Ross? On Ditzian's wish list: Darren Aronofsky. "Great with the hand-held camera, great with these intimate first-person narratives. But it's not going to happen. He's busy."

Ditzian's pick for the auteur to drive Katniss' next chapter is Oscar-winning Danny Boyle, who's no stranger to hand-held cameras himself and has proved time and time again, from "Trainspotting" to "127 Hours," that he's a master of first-person tales as well.

The MTV Movies staff also predicts the short list of directors will include Steven Soderbergh, John Hillcoat and J.J. Abrams.

Best Picks for the "Catching Fire" Director Job

"The movie can survive," Ditzian said.

NJ flood victims: Where did federal aid millions go?

Bob Sullivan / msnbc.com

Giselle Sedano looks over flood-related paperwork at a coffee shop near her midtown Manhattan office.

By Bob Sullivan

Giselle and Zenayda Sedano of Cranford, N.J., never had a chance of keeping the rampaging waters of the Rahway River out of their home when Hurricane Irene roared through northern New Jersey in August. Now they are wondering if they ever had a chance to get any of the $21 million that the Federal Emergency Management Agency sent to help New Jersey?s flood victims.

We first met the Sedano sisters a day after the hurricane hit on Aug. 28, causing the Rahway River to breach containment and wreak havoc in their suburb of Cranford, where about one in five homes were damaged. They were picking through all of their worldly belongings and looking for something, anything, that wasn?t completely waterlogged.?

Now, more than eight months later, they are wondering why they didn?t receive any federal disaster aid to flood-proof their home, which is only about 100 feet from the river, while some of their neighbors who live farther from the water are getting nearly $200,000. Other Cranford residents are asking similar questions.

?There are homes in plain sight of mine that were selected which I will have to witness get elevated. But I'm right next to the river. I just don't understand," Giselle Sedano said. "It?s so hard waking up every day not knowing what?s going on."

The controversy highlights the challenges that FEMA and local officials face as they try to plan ahead and minimize future flood disasters.

Msnbc.com profiled the Sedano sisters in August when writing about the towns hit hardest by Irene. Giselle is a hedge-fund analyst and Cornell graduate; Zenayda works in the pharmaceutical business and is a Rutgers graduate. The two successful 20-somethings pooled their resources to buy a home in 2009, soon after they graduated from college, so they could move with their parents to Cranford.

Their parents came from Peru in the 1980s with nothing other than the clothes in their suitcase. Irene left the entire family in a similar fate; mom, dad, and the two sisters had little left outside the clothes they took when fleeing to a nearby hotel right before the Irene hit.

Nearly six months to the day after the storm, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie announced that FEMA had awarded the state $21.6 million through its Hazard Mitigation Grant program. The money was promised to seven municipalities hit hard by the storm; Cranford received $3.1 million for "the elevation of select dwellings."? At around the same time, some Cranford residents began receiving phone calls saying they'd been selected for elevation grants. Others, including the Sedanos, heard nothing.

Like dozens of other Cranford residents, the Sedanos had responded to a notice last fall from the township indicating they'd like to participate in the elevation grant program. It's not cheap; even with the grant money, residents have to pay 25 percent of the cost.

Neighbor Kristen Wolansky also requested elevation aid, but she said the township never even acknowledged receipt of the request.

"There was no confirmation that your name was received. The information was just submitted into a void," she said.

The list of lucky homeowners isn't public -- "winners" were notified only by phone call, said Wolansky. But she and another frustrated Cranford resident, Steve Gorski, have pieced together a map based on conversations with neighbors. While unofficial, it shows several homes around the Sedanos' house receiving aid.

It makes sense for FEMA to flood-proof homes that are subject to repeated disasters. Like most flood victims, the Sedanos paid to participate in the National Flood Insurance program ? in their case, the premiums were $2,015 annually. Elevating homes -- or purchasing them outright and making them into parkland -- is cheaper in the long run than continuing to pay pricey settlements every 10 or 20 years.

But there's not nearly enough money to buy out or elevate every home in danger -- only about 1 in 10 homes statewide in risky areas will receive funds from the $21 million FEMA grant, New Jersey state officials say. That means there's always a lot of disappointment when flood relief grants are doled out.

But the process for picking winners and losers raises questions. Ultimately, local officials decide which residents get the aid. There are complex considerations, such as preserving the character of neighborhoods, which are best left to local officials. But that also leaves them open to criticism and accusations of political patronage.

Compounding the problem are privacy requirements surrounding the process. Because participation is optional, and residents can decline the aid, the list of selected homeowners remains a secret until contracts are signed to begin work. That also means families like the Sedanos have no real avenue for appeal.

Bob Sullivan / msnbc.com

Giselle and Zenayda Sedano in August 2011.

FEMA?s Hazard Mitigation Program has benefitted communities around the country. The state of Vermont received post-Irene buyout and elevation grants of $19.8 million, for example. ?But the program also has a spotty history. More than $1 billion was set aside for land acquisitions and home elevations after Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana, but arguments over how to implement the program delayed the awarding of any grants for two years ? and by 2008 ? three years after the monster storm -- only 14 grants were paid out. Claims of contractor fraud also complicated that awards process.

By that measure, the post-Irene grant process is moving swiftly in New Jersey. Still, the Cranford secret has been kept for a while -- the homes picked by Cranford officials had to be included in the town's initial application for aid, which was filed sometime in the fall, according to state officials.

FEMA directed questions about the New Jersey grant process to state officials; the governor's office directed questions to the state?s Office of Emergency Management.

Mary Goepfert, spokeswoman for that agency, explained the process to msnbc.com.

"The homeowners have to stay private because if they don't participate, and their name is on a list ? their home would be severely devalued," she said.

Goepfert said local officials must show that the choice of winners is "financially advantageous" -- that is, a buyout or elevation project must be cheaper than expected future insurance payouts. But otherwise, home selection is entirely up to municipalities, she said.

"For instance, it might make more sense to buy out three, four, five or six houses in the same neighborhood than it would to buy a house here and a house there,? she said.

But what if a resident who wasn't selected feels the process was unfair?

"That's a question for the municipality," she said.

Cranford Mayor David Robinson said he understands why some residents might be frustrated, but said the municipality initially tried to get enough money to elevate about 50 homes and was told by federal and state authorities to tone down its application.? Right now, 18 homes are slated to get elevation aid, and another five are selected as alternates in case others back out.

"We're going to go neighborhood by neighborhood and try to get all of them elevated," he said. "It's just a matter of which homes get first priority. That's what we really focused on." The town plans to apply for additional elevation grants in the future, he said.

This time, municipal officials looked at prior loss history, past flood claims and other data?when picking the homes,?he said, admitting that some of that data is incomplete.

"We've also found instances where people may have had private flood insurance, and?we discover that's a blind spot not included in (our) loss data," he said. "We're working hard to fix that. ... (This time) we focused on homes closest to the river and going neighborhood by neighborhood with the loss data that we had."?

While the 18 "winning" homeowners and 5 alternates have been informed, he said there is no process to tell disappointed homeowners that they weren't picked, or why.

And how should a homeowner like Sedano feel if they feel left out, while neighbors benefit?

"If it's a next-door neighbor, maybe the explanation was that their loss data didn't fit into the cost-benefit analysis that was being worked on at that point," he said.?

The "losers" must simply trust that the selection was fair. The data -- and the reason for the selections -- remains private.

There is one public curiosity about Cranford's aid grant. The other six cities that were promised post-Irene grants all elected property buyouts; Cranford was the only municipality to pick home elevation.? That can be far less disruptive for homeowners, of course, because they don?t have to move. Elevation benefits the town's tax coffers, too, Goepfert said.

"With a buyout, those properties are written off from the tax ratable base," she said.? "But why Cranford chose elevation, you'd have to ask them."

Bob Sullivan / msnbc.com

The Sedano sisters pick through the belongs outside their flooded Cranford home in August 2011.

Mayor Robinson said no one in the town expressed interest in a buyout.

All this?mystery might be over soon. Goepfert said post-Irene aid was fast-tracked, and she hoped contracts for construction and buyouts would be signed within a month. Then, the list of winners and losers will be made public, she said.

For now, the Sedanos are slowing putting their lives, and their home, back in order. Most of the basic reconstruction of their home has been completed, and the family has moved back in, albeit with sparse furniture. They celebrated Easter Sunday at home this past weekend, their first meal in their rebuilt dining room since the flood.

"There were a few tears during dinner," Giselle said.

But the view of the river out their window, which once brought a sense of tranquility, now only brings trepidation. And until the list of to-be-elevated homes is published, the Sedanos are forced to wait and wonder why they weren't chosen.

"We find it totally unfair. Our home is directly in front of the river," Zedayna said.??

DARPA realizes it needs contact lenses, opts for those nice AR tinted ones (video)

DARPA realizes it needs contact lenses, opts for those nice AR tinted ones (video)DARPA saw the battlefield potential in AR glasses ages ago, when even Sergey Brin was happy to wear regular Ray-Bans. It's now stepped up its investment, giving more cash to one of its research contractors -- a company called Innovega -- to produce prototype contact lenses that could make military wearable HUDs smaller and less conspicuous. Innovega's iOptik lenses don't actually include a display, but rather allow the human eye to focus on an image from a separate accessory that sits right up close to the eyeball. The lenses have different zones that give the wearer multiple areas of focus, so they can see the overlaid augmented reality HUD -- such as a feed from an overhead drone -- but also warlike events going on in the immediate environment. Judging from the video after the break, however, calling them plain 'bifocals' might be taboo.

Overweight moms with moderately high blood sugar raise health risk

CHICAGO --- Pregnant women who are overweight with moderately elevated blood sugar never set off any alarms for their physicians. The big concern was for women who were obese or who had gestational diabetes because those conditions are known to cause a host of health risks to the mom and baby.

But a new study shows these women who are just above average for weight and blood sugar are at a higher risk of bad pregnancy outcomes than previously known. In fact, this group is at higher risk than pregnant women who are obese with normal blood sugar or pregnant women who have gestational diabetes and a normal weight.

"These are women who have not been on our radar because they don't have gestational diabetes and aren't obese, but our study shows if you are one step away from each of those, you carry some significant risks," said principle investigator Boyd Metzger, M.D., a professor of medicine-endocrinology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a physician at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. "We need to address the combination of overweight and blood sugar of these women as urgently as we do for women who are obese or have gestational diabetes."

This group of women comprised about 6 percent of the total number of women in the study. Obese women made up 16 percent of the group and those with gestational diabetes accounted for 13.7 percent.

The study also found women who are both obese and have gestational diabetes are at a much higher risk of having an adverse pregnancy than women having only one of those conditions.

The paper, published in the April issue of Diabetes Care, is from the Hyperglycemia and Adverse Pregnancy Outcome (HAPO) Study and includes 23,316 women from nine countries.

One of the adverse outcomes for these mothers is having large babies, the result of fat accumulation. Large babies increase the risk of injury to the baby during vaginal delivery, increasing the likelihood of a Caesarean section.

The study found when the mothers are obese and have gestational diabetes, the babies weigh 340 grams more than babies of mothers with normal weight and blood sugar. When the mothers are overweight (but not obese) with above-average blood sugar levels, the babies weigh 214 grams more. Mothers of normal weight but with gestational diabetes have babies who weigh 164 grams more. And obese mothers with normal glucose levels have babies with an increased weight of 174 grams.

A pregnant woman's higher blood sugar level and weight also can lead to higher insulin and lower blood sugar levels in a newborn. In turn, these effects may eventually trigger obesity and diabetes, perhaps as early as childhood.

"The big message from this is when you look at the impact of nutrition, metabolism and weight on pregnancy outcomes, every woman on her first prenatal visit -- should get a prescription for a session with a dietician and an appropriate healthy eating plan for her pregnancy," said Metzger, also the Tom D. Spies Professor of Metabolism and Nutrition at Northwestern's Feinberg School. "This doesn't happen, but it should, and insurance companies should reimburse it."

Reincarnate Rinpoche Taking Buddhism to Mongolia, Kalmykia

As a 5-year-old, Erdne Ombadykow began to display signs of eccentric behavior. While his many brothers and sisters were busy watching cartoons on TV or playing in the streets of their rough Philadelphia neighborhood, Erdne would bug his mother to take him to a nearby Buddhist temple.

At the temple, the moonfaced little boy would mimic the chanting monks. Erdne's parents were Buddhists -- they were immigrants from Kalmykia, a Mongolian enclave inside Russia -- but not particularly religious, and they were baffled by their son's devotion. In 1979, when Erdne was 7, the Dalai Lama visited the temple, and the little boy crawled straight into his lap.

Thus began the strange odyssey of a Philly-born child who was recognized as the reincarnation of an 11th century Indian mystic the Tibetans call Telo Rinpoche. It would lead him to a Tibetan monastery in southern India and back to the life of a teenager with attitude in Philadelphia -- crazy about girls, basketball and hard rock. He would endure a prolonged crisis of faith in which he abandoned his priestly vows, delivered pizzas in Colorado and found a wife. It took a scolding from the Dalai Lama himself to set him back on his extraordinary path: reviving Buddhism in Mongolia and Kalmykia, where 70 years of communist purges had silenced the faith. "I kept asking myself, Why? Why me?" Ombadykow, now 39, tells TIME at his Colorado home.

(MORE: Why India Is Investigating a Reincarnated Tibetan Lama)

These days, Ombadykow is busy with what can be called the Dalai Lama's re-evangelizing of Mongolia, where Buddhism was all but obliterated under communist rule. Beijing is not pleased with the growing Tibetan influence in Mongolia. Just hours after another revered lama, Jetsun Dhampa, died in Ulan Bator, the Mongolian capital, on March 2, a Chinese delegation warned the Mongolian government to keep the Tibetans and the Dalai Lama out of the search for his new incarnation. So far, the Mongolians have resisted Chinese pressure. As the new Telo Rinpoche, Ombadykow's focus is also on Tibet, where over 30 Tibetans, mostly monks and nuns, have set themselves on fire to protest Chinese rule. While taking one's life is against Buddhist principles, he says, "their motivation is pure. It's a desperate act in desperate times. They were hoping it would benefit Tibetans."

But there was a lifetime (or more) of faith lost and regained before Ombadykow found his footing as the reincarnated Telo Rinpoche -- and a role in the Dalai Lama's vision for Mongolia, Tibet and other former Buddhist lands.

A cornerstone of Tibetan Buddhism, which has been practiced for centuries in both Mongolia and Kalmykia, is the belief that a great teacher, or lama, will keep returning for many lifetimes to continue his teaching. Telo Rinpoche, who is said to have left the Himalayas to spread Buddhism among the Mongolian horsemen, is one such revered teacher. The Dalai Lama, who asked young Erdne to move to a monastery in India after their Philadelphia encounter, recognized him as Telo Rinpoche's reincarnation.

(VIDEO: 10 Questions for the Dalai Lama)

The previous incarnation of Telo Rinpoche was not only a spiritual leader but a political one as well. He helped spearhead the failed Mongolian resistance against the communists. He escaped from Mongolia in 1939, just as the Bolsheviks began their slaughter of 30,000 Buddhist lamas and their razing of over 2,000 temples and monasteries. He eventually reached the U.S. on a scholar's visa.

And guess where he settled? In Philadelphia. He died in 1965. Only seven years later, the new Telo Rinpoche was born in the same city, into the large, brawling Ombadykow family.

It was not an easy path. In India, the young Telo Rinpoche struggled to adapt to monastery life. He was a curiosity. "I stood out. I was this kid from America who happened to be Mongolian," he says. "But the Dalai Lama really cared for me. The Dalai Lama said, 'If you have any change of mind, don't do anything without talking to me first.' " Those words would come to haunt him. He confesses that as a rebellious teenager, he sneaked out of the monastery at night to watch TV at a chai shop. On a visit back to Philadelphia, he welcomed release from the monastery's iron discipline. By then, his parents had separated, and he fell in with his teenage cousins, staying out late, driving fast and ogling girls (though he kept his celibacy vow). A basketball fanatic, he says he wanted to "be as free as Michael Jordan" soaring to the hoop.

Meanwhile, the Soviet Union was crumbling. In 1991, the Dalai Lama notified Telo Rinpoche that he was arranging for him to make a trip to Mongolia. "Sooner or later," the Dalai Lama wrote him, "you'll have responsibilities there." The 19-year-old lama flew to Mongolia and was given a jubilant welcome; his previous incarnation was much revered there. Even as a political neophyte, he noticed that the country was "boiling."

Next, the Dalai Lama sent him to Kalmykia. Even though his parents were both Kalmyks, the new Telo Rinpoche didn't speak a word of the language. Through an interpreter, he asked if anyone knew whether his relatives had survived the Siberian labor camps. "Next day, I came down to the hotel lobby, and there was a fight going on between my mom's and my dad's relatives to see who would take me home first," he says, laughing. Several months later he received an invitation from the Kalmyk government to return as the republic's chief spiritual leader. Telo Rinpoche consulted the Dalai Lama, who cautioned that it might be too heavy a responsibility for the young monk. "But," the Dalai Lama told him, "go and do your best."

The young lama lasted only a year there. He found the Kalmyks fearful as they emerged from Soviet rule. He also felt manipulated by old communist apparatchiks who viewed him as a naive pawn. Worst of all, he started to doubt himself. Tenzing Sonam, a filmmaker who accompanied Telo Rinpoche to Kalmykia, recalls, "He was a callow 20-year-old -- alone in a strange land, faced with unrealistically high expectations from its people and racked by personal doubt and confusion." Looking back on those dark days, Telo Rinpoche says he started thinking, "Maybe I'm not the right person. Maybe there was a mistake." Despondent, he would sit in his dreary, Soviet-era hotel room, listening to the band Smashing Pumpkins.

(PHOTOS: A New Tibet)

Without telling the Dalai Lama, Telo Rinpoche left Kalmykia and shed his monk's robes. He went back to the States and drifted westward to Colorado, where he built houses, landscaped gardens, pestered people as a telemarketer and delivered pizzas. He also fell in love. But whenever he collected enough cash, he would head back to his former monastery in India. One of his trips coincided with a ceremonial visit by the Dalai Lama, who spotted the ex-lama. "So this is what you've turned into," the Dalai Lama said harshly. Telo Rinpoche blurted out, "It was all out of stupidity. I'm lost!" The Dalai Lama kept glaring at him, then burst out laughing. "O.K., O.K. Don't worry," he reassured him.

As Telo Rinpoche was leaving the room, the Dalai Lama called out to him, "How's your partner?" Telo Rinpoche was stunned that the Dalai Lama knew about his girlfriend. He stammered a reply: "She comes from a poor Tibetan family but very religious." The Dalai Lama laughed. "She's Tibetan? No need to worry, then. I thought you were going out with a blonde!"

Telo Rinpoche went back to America, where he eventually married his girlfriend and had a son with her. But even as he became a layman, he grew serious about his duties as the reincarnation of Telo Rinpoche. He funded construction of a shining white Buddhist temple in Kalmykia and arranged for young men to study in India. And he occasionally returned to Mongolia, where the communists had obliterated Buddhism. "The communists destroyed temples, and they destroyed minds," says Orna Tsultem, a Mongolian art historian at the Institute for East Asian Studies in Berkeley, Calif. In Ulan Bator only a single monastery, Ganden, was left standing. It was kept as a showpiece from the bad old days of religious feudalism, but the monks were forced to abandon their robes and marry. The secret police placed spies among them. Many monks wandered drunkenly around the monastery. The communists also passed a law banning searches for new incarnate lamas. There are a handful of others, aside from Telo Rinpoche. A few were spirited off to India. Others have yet to be found.

(PHOTOS: A Photographer's Mongolian Diary)

Superstitions were harder to wipe out than organized religion. The nomadic Mongolian herdsmen believe that Buddhist deities inhabit every mountain, lake and river, and they often splash a bit of milk in these places as an offering. Telo Rinpoche found that "people follow the rituals, but there is a limited understanding of Buddhism." Tiny prayer wheels are now a popular car ornament, a talisman to ward off accidents.

Formal ties between the Mongolians and Tibetan lamas are increasing. Telo Rinpoche now visits Mongolia at least once a year, and he is helping promote a religious exchange between Mongolia and the Dalai Lama's institutions-in-exile. Young Mongolian men and women are crossing the Himalayas to study dialectics, tantric Buddhism, medicine and astrology. Tibetans in burgundy robes are a common sight at Ulan Bator's airport; they fan out across the grassy plains, performing rituals for Mongolians who seek divine intervention for everything from good exam grades to better jobs.

Mongolian Buddhists believe that since the former Telo Rinpoche escaped from the communist takeover in the 1930s, it has taken him 1? lifetimes -- and a long detour through Philadelphia -- to return. "Christians would call this destiny or fate," Telo Rinpoche says simply. "We call it karma."

Prevent Your Computer From Crashing: Download A Registry Cleaner

Does it bother and even annoy you why your personal computer no longer work as efficiently and as speedily as it used to?? Does it now take too long for your PC to boot up or shut down? ?Does your computer constantly freeze up and has significantly affected your productivity?? Do you feel hopeless about dealing with this situation?? You are not alone.? Most computer owners that own Windows operating systems run into this problem sooner or later if they don?t have any knowledge of system maintenance.? If you want to skip the quick rundown on how all these work and want to know ASAP on how you can get your computer to work like it used to, you may go to Reg Cure right away. ?

?

A lot of computer owners do not really know the first thing about their computer?s maintenance; in fact, they probably do not know it needs upkeep to begin with! ?This article will show you why you need to regularly check your system for errors, how you can go about doing it and what you?re going to have to do to resolve it.? The first thing you need to know is that every computer needs to be regularly maintained.? Outdated files and programs you no longer use should be removed and uninstall so you can allocate your computer?s resources to applications and programs you use most. ?To do that without a lot of complicated instructions and a lot of hassle, in general, you can make use of software like RegClean, RegistryFix and FixCleaner .?

?

It is, however, very important to note that computers run by Windows OS are the most vulnerable to these errors and are thus the most in need of a routine system checkup.? This is because Windows maintains a file system called a registry.? This registry is where configuration settings involving how programs are run and how users use their computer are kept.? It is this database that keeps your computer up to date with which programs it should allocate more system resources to and pretty much how it should work in keeping with a specific user?s profile specifications.? However, registries? biggest issue is that they do not update themselves.? They get cluttered with missing links and orphaned files that eventually pile up to make your computer lag or freeze up, among other things.? All of these can be addressed by The RegClean Review at ReviewMOZ.org.

Wedding Photography Checklist for the Ceremony

Couples should discuss with their photographer the images they want recorded during their wedding ceremony.

Although a professional wedding photographer knows their job, a bride and groom should discuss their expectations for specific photographs so they aren?t disappointed when they look through their proof book for particular images. An unexpected moment might not get captured, but shots of scheduled actions should meet a couple?s desires.

Photographers working in tandem may have an easier time capturing all desired images and angles. Providing an edited checklist of the pictures a couple expects should be provided to photographers as soon as possible so they don't spend the day with pen and list in hand and missing photographic opportunities.

Pictures at the Ceremony Site

Think of these photographs as setting the stage, giving you a record of the environment you have selected or created to frame your wedding day.

  • Outside the ceremony site
  • Ceremony site without guests
  • Close-up of floral d?cor or other details
  • Close-up of the programs
  • Bride stepping out of the limo
  • Groom stepping out of his limo
  • Guests walking into the ceremony site
  • Bride and her father entering the ceremony site

Photographs of the Wedding Ceremony

You want a lot of pictures so you can select your favorites. Remember, some images may include multiple elements (bride and groom holding hands before the officiant with the canopy in view). If some of the shots below seem too stilted for you, then tell the photographer that you don?t want those images; why have him or her waste time focusing on views that don?t reflect the way you want your day recorded?

  • Ceremony musicians
  • Altar or canopy during the ceremony
  • Officiant
  • Ushers escorting the parents to their seats
  • Grandparents walking down the aisle
  • Groom waiting at the altar
  • Flower girl walking down the aisle
  • Ring bearer walking down the aisle
  • Maid of honor walking down the aisle
  • Bridesmaids walking down the aisle
  • Close-up of the bride just before her entrance
  • Bride walking down the aisle ? front and side shots
  • Father giving away the bride
  • Back view of the bride and her father walking down the aisle with the groom in the distance
  • Groom seeing the bride for the first time
  • Bride and her father hugging at the end of the aisle
  • Over the groom?s shoulder image of the bride
  • Over the bride?s shoulder image of the groom
  • Shots of the ceremony?s guests
  • Images of the Unity ceremony
  • Bride?s and groom?s hands as they exchange rings (a close-up may be staged after the ceremony)
  • Close-ups of the bride and groom exchanging vows
  • Wide-shots of the bride and groom exchanging vows
  • Bride and groom holding hands
  • Bride and groom kiss
  • Wide shot of the ceremony in progress from the back
  • Bride and groom walking down the aisle

Photographs after the Ceremony

If your ceremony and reception are being held at the same location, you can skip these pictures. Remember to talk to your photographer about anything special you have planned so he or she can be in the right place at the right time.

  • Receiving line
  • Bride and groom hugging guests and getting congratulations
  • Bride and groom leaving the location of the ceremony
  • Guests throwing confetti, birdseed, rose petals; butterflies being released
  • Bride and groom getting into the car to go to the reception
  • Bride and groom in limo backseat

Engaged couples should consider the images of their wedding day that they find most appealing and important to them. Not every above listed shot is a must-have for every couple. While not trying to dictate every click of the camera, the couple can guide the photographer to know what they expect for photographs before the ceremony and during the reception as well as formal groupings.

Mother of Texas shooting suspect: 'talented' son mixed tequila, Xanax

DALLAS (AP) - The mother of a man charged in the fatal shooting of a Texas police officer said her son is a talented software engineer who has been struggling with depression for months after a bitter breakup with his longtime girlfriend.

Mary O'Dell told The Associated Press on Saturday that she was struggling to come to grips with the arrest of her 24-year-old son, Brandon Montgomery Daniel. He is charged in the shooting death of Austin Senior Police Officer Jaime Padron.

She said she talked with her son Thursday evening, and that he had been taking the prescription anti-anxiety drug Xanax and drinking tequila. Hours later, Padron was fatally shot at a Walmart while trying to subdue a potentially intoxicated man who was later identified as Daniel, investigators said.

Two employees tackled and disarmed him, then held him until help arrived.

O'Dell said her son graduated with honors from Colorado State University and had been on the "fast track" at Hewlett-Packard. She described him as a bright young man who was published in three science journals while still in college.

But about three months ago, he began wrestling with a deep depression after a difficult breakup with his longtime girlfriend, she said. Daniel had not been behaving like himself recently and was charged with driving while intoxicated, his mother said.

Authorities said Padron, 40, was responding to a call about a drunk man inside the Walmart around 2:30 a.m. Friday. Police said the suspect tried to run and the officer chased after him before the two fell to the ground, then the man produced a semi-automatic pistol and shot the officer.

Daniel was booked on a capital murder charge. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

O'Dell, who lives in Colorado, said she has not been able to speak with Daniel and that he not yet have an attorney. She said she was relayed information from his DWI attorney, who was able to visit with him in the Travis County jail in Austin. She said Daniel had no memory of what happened after 2 a.m. Friday.

"He wasn't aware this whole particular incident had taken place, he was under the influence of tequila and Xanax," she said.

O'Dell expressed sympathy for Padron's family, saying she has "nothing but a deep felt pain" over his death.

Padron was the first officer shot and killed in the line of duty in Austin since 1978. He worked at the department for more than three years and had previously worked for the Austin airport police and the San Angelo police department for 14 years.

Padron, a former Marine, a veteran of the Gulf War

He left behind two daughters, ages 10 and 6.

"I don't know how this happened," O'Dell said. "There is so much loss here."
