Exclusive: Goldman to begin fresh round of job cuts

(Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group Inc will begin a fresh round of job cuts as early as this week, sources familiar with the matter said on Monday, with its equities-trading business bracing for bigger cuts than fixed-income trading.

The bank usually culls out the weakest 5 percent of its employees around now. But the cuts will likely be deeper in some businesses, particularly equities trading, where volumes and earnings are weak. The number of shares traded on major U.S. exchanges so far this year is down 7.2 percent.

Fixed-income trading at Goldman, which took big hits last year but has had better volumes this year, will likely see cuts of less than 5 percent, the sources said. It is unclear whether the cuts in totality will be larger than Goldman's typical 5 percent culling across the firm.

"As market activity has picked up in certain areas, we remain focused on prudently managing expenses and allocating resources to ensure we are best able to meet our clients' needs and generate good returns for our shareholders," said Goldman spokesman David Wells, who declined to comment on layoffs.

The cuts underscore how even as Wall Street shows some signs of recovering, banks are looking to thin their ranks to boost profitability.

Morgan Stanley, Bank of America Corp, Citigroup Inc, and UBS AG, have been cutting staff for the past few years, after revenue has been under pressure in multiple businesses. Regulations, meanwhile, are increasing banks' costs.

Over the past two years, Goldman has cut its workforce by 9 percent, or 3,300 employees.

Earlier this month, Goldman's new chief financial officer, Harvey Schwartz, said that laying off more workers may be the way for banks to generate higher returns on equity for shareholders. The measure is important because it shows how much profit banks can squeeze from their balance sheets.

Last year, Goldman's return-on-equity was 10.7 percent, an improvement from 2011, but still well below pre-financial crisis highs above 30 percent. Schwartz said he does not see Goldman's returns last year as "aspirational for the long term."

"I think the industry will migrate to higher returns because they will have to," Schwartz said, adding that it might be "a question of excess capacity coming out of the industry over a period of time."

HIGH PROFILE EXITS

Goldman has also experienced a wave of departures of partners and managing directors, who are typically the company's biggest earners. Some big-name departures that have either occurred this year or were announced in internal memos. They include Jim O'Neill, the chairman of asset management, Henry Cornell, who retired as vice chairman of the merchant banking unit, Nick Burgin, who had been head of foreign-exchange, Scott Stanford, a co-head of global internet investment banking, and Ned Segal, who headed global software investment banking.

Former Goldman CFO David Viniar, who retired at the end of January, has said that the departures are a natural progression of senior executives leaving to make way for more junior employees to move up the ranks, though they have also helped the bank cut compensation costs.

Last year, Goldman's paid out 37.9 percent of its revenue to employees, down from 42.4 percent the previous year. The lower compensation ratio was cheered by investors and analysts, who had been questioning the bank about cost-cutting for some time.

Goldman shares were down 2.3 percent on Monday afternoon, at $150.54. As of Friday's close, the stock was up 21 percent year-to-date.

New clot removal devices show promise for treating stroke patients

Feb. 25, 2013 ? Specialists at Stony Brook Medicine's Cerebrovascular and Stroke Center (CVC) are treating patients with a new generation of blood clot removal devices that show promise in successfully revascularizing stroke patients, including those with large vessel blockages. The Solitaire Flow Restoration Device and the Trevo device, approved by Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2012 to treat stroke caused by the sudden obstruction of a brain blood vessel (acute ischemic stroke) showed improved results over a previous standard and first generation clot-removal device in clinical trials.

"We have had excellent outcomes using these new devices," said David Fiorella, M.D., Ph.D., a Professor of Clinical Neurological Surgery and Radiology at Stony Brook University School of Medicine and Co-Director of the CVC. "In acute ischemic stroke, 'time is brain,' and in some cases just minutes matter. Therefore, restoring blood flow in an effective and timely manner is critical to the survival and recovery of stroke patients. These new devices enable us to quickly restore blood flow and retrieve the clot in most patients," said Dr. Fiorella, who has performed some 30 procedures on stroke patients using the new devices.

"These blot clot removal devices are an important new component of our armamentarium against stroke" said Henry Woo, MD, Professor of Neurological Surgery and Radiology and Co-Director of the CVC, who has also used both devices in patient procedures. "Our center provides endovascular treatment for acute stroke 24/7, and by having the latest technologies to remove brain blood clots, and the expertise to perform endovascular procedures, our Center remains on the cutting-edge against this life-threatening condition."

According to the American Stroke Association, stroke remains the fourth leading cause of death and leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average a stroke occurs every 40 seconds in the country, and someone dies from a stroke every four minutes. These statistics speak to the need to develop more effective drugs, devices, and procedures to treat stroke.

Recent results of clinical trials reported in The New England Journal of Medicine (February 2013) about the use of first generation of blood clot removal devices in the endovascular treatment of acute ischemic stroke revealed that endovascular treatment does not result in better patient outcomes compared to standard drug treatments. Dr. Fiorella contends that while these trial results are important in the search for the best treatment protocols for acute ischemic stroke, the new devices and techniques are markedly better than those used to treat the majority of patients in these trials and may yet prove to be the most effective approach in select patients. Further research trials are being conducted at Stony Brook to investigate the efficacy of these newer, better devices in acute ischemic stroke.

The new devices that Stony Brook cerebrovascular specialists use to perform revascularization are expandable wire-mesh systems that collapse and are delivered into the brain blood vessels through small flexible tubes (microcatheters) which are guided from the groin to the brain. The devices open at the site of the clot, displacing the occlusion and immediately restoring blood flow to the brain. When the devices are withdrawn from the blood vessel, they take the clot with them, allowing the clot to be removed from the blood vessel.

Dr. Fiorella said that while intravenous clot-busting drugs remain a standard part of stroke therapy, endovascular therapies using the new devices are particularly beneficial when treating certain stroke patients.

"In many of the more severe stroke cases where the main arteries of the brain are blocked, intravenous medications are predictably ineffective, failing to open the occluded artery in 70 to 90 percent of the cases. Also, many patients are not eligible for intravenous clot busting medication because of their time of presentation, existing medical conditions, recent surgery, or the medications they take, such as blood thinners," he explained. "In these cases where intravenous medications are ineffective or contraindicated, endovascular treatments using these new devices offer patients the most promise."

"I feel extremely good and am able to do the things I did before my stroke, and that includes taking care of my grandchildren and running road races," said Michael Jezewski, 66, a retiree from Centereach, N.Y., who ran a five kilometer race just two months after his May 2012 stroke. "I believe that Dr. Fiorella's procedure did save my life and contributed greatly to my quick recovery."

Jezewski did not have a history of stroke and collapsed while at doctor's appointment. He was rushed to Stony Brook where Dr. Fiorella performed endovascular treatment with one of the new devices within two hours of Jezewski's sudden collapse. Jezewski's symptoms started with fatigue and no feeling on the right side of his body, and then quickly progressed to paralysis and the inability to speak. Upon awaking from the clot removal procedure, the majority of his symptoms had completely resolved.

When Shelley Broven, 66, of Setauket, N.Y., began to feel dizzy and had a hard time speaking during her husband's 70th birthday party in November 2012, friends called an ambulance from the restaurant. She was rushed to Stony Brook where Dr. Fiorella performed endovascular treatment with a new generation device.

"I don't recall much of what happened after that incident, but within a week I was out of the hospital, beginning rehabilitation, and feeling pretty good," said Broven. "Each week I have more energy and can express myself more clearly," added Broven, whose stroke resulted from a nearly completely blocked carotid artery which sent a blood clot into her brain blood vessels.

About the New Devices

In two separate multicenter clinical trials reported in The Lancet the new devices were compared to a standard first generation clot removal device called the Merci Retriever.

In one published report, the Solitaire device opened blocked arteries in approximately 70 percent of the patients, compared to only 30 percent treated with the previous device. When other therapies were used with Solitaire, the success rate improved to 80 percent. After three months, 58 percent of the patients with the Solitaire device had a good neurological outcome in comparison to 33 percent of those treated with the standard device. In addition, the mortality rates were less than half in those treated with the newer generation device.

Another published report compared the Trevo device with the Merci Retriever. In this trial, the new Trevo device was superior to the older device, with an 86 percent success rate in opening the blocked brain blood vessel. When other therapies were added, the Trevo device success rate was more than 90 percent.

Heartland New Zealand, which gained bank registration in December, posted a 9.2 percent gain in first-half profit on increased earnings from retail, business and rural lending and a reduction in costs.

Profit rose to $10.7 million in the six months ended Dec. 31, from $9.8 million a year earlier, the Christchurch-based company said in a statement. Net operating income rose 15 percent to $51.8 million, while operating expenses fell 10 percent to $31.9 million.

Growth in the net operating income mainly reflected the acquisition of PGG Wrightson Finance in August 2011 and lower cost of funds, the company said.

That more than offset a wider $5.28 million loss from the non-core property businesses acquired from Marac as part of the merger that created the company. The year-earlier loss was $1.2 million. Heartland took a $4 million impairment expense against the property book, up from impairments of $1.6 million a year earlier.

Heartland shares rose 2.7 percent to 75 cents after the results, which beat brokerage First NZ Capital's forecast of $11.1 million profit. It will pay a first-half dividend of 2 cents a share on April 5 to shareholders on the register as at March 20.

Net impaired, restructured and past due loans over 90 days were $80.2 million as at Dec. 31, down from $90.5 million a year earlier and mainly reflecting the non-core property book, which consists of $87.9 million of receivables and $55.3 million of investment properties.

The company has embarked on a review of its plan for a managed exit from non-core property over five years.

The receivables book for retail and consumer, the biggest unit of the company's core business, fell by $9 million to $945.8 million, while net operating income rose 2.3 percent to $24.1 million. Heartland said strong motor vehicle receivables growth was offset by a shrinking residential mortgage book in the face of a competitive market. Profit rose to $17 million from $14.9 million.

Business receivables shrank by 9.7 million to $530.5 million, which it said reflected higher levels of repayments "in a low credit growth market." Business profit rose to $8.9 million from $5.5 million a year earlier.

The rural receivables book grew to $480.6 million from $478.6 million, which it said reflected low seasonal demand in livestock trading and a low credit growth environment. It expects a pickup in the second half. Rural earnings rose to $8.7 million from $5.1 million.

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) ? Kendall Williams sank a Mountain West Conference record 10 3-pointers on his way to a career-high 46 points and No. 16 New Mexico ended No. 22 Colorado State's 27-game home-court winning streak 91-82 Saturday.

Alex Kirk added 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Lobos (23-4, 10-2), increased their lead in the conference race to two games over the Rams (21-5, 8-4).

Colton Iverson had 26 points and 15 boards for the Rams, who looked like they were going to move into a first-place tie atop the standings after taking a 70-64 lead at the 6-minute mark.

Williams, who had been on the bench with four fouls, returned and hit three 3s during a 14-2 run that gave New Mexico a 78-72 lead.

His 10 3-pointers broke the conference mark of nine set by several players, most recently UNLV's Chace Stanback against Central Arkansas on Dec. 28, 2011.

Williams' previous career best was 24 points against Indiana State and New Mexico State earlier this season.

Wes Eikmeier added 22 points for the Rams and Dorian Green had 20. Eikmeier scored 11 straight at one point as Colorado State built a 55-50 lead early in the second half.

The Lobos quieted the crowd with a 12-6 run to regain the lead at 62-61, but Williams was whistled for his fourth foul and took a seat at the nine-minute mark.

He returned with the Lobos down 70-64 and sparked the comeback.

The Rams were coming off a two-point loss at UNLV on Wednesday night that snapped their six-game winning streak that began after a 66-61 loss to the Lobos in Albuquerque last month.

The Rams' last loss at home was Nov. 11, 2012, to Southern Miss, which was coached by Larry Eustachy, who is in his first season as Colorado State's coach.

Colorado State's 27-game home winning streak was the third-longest in the nation.

Williams scored 20 points in the first half, when he made five 3-pointers, and Kirk scored 12 first-half points, but the Lobos trailed 41-38 at the break. The opening 20 minutes featured eight ties and nine lead changes.

Iverson, who had 13 first-half points for the Rams, picked up his second foul with just nine-tenths of a second left in the first half when he hammered Chad Adams on his way to the basket.

Memolane, a social-media aggregator that promised trips down memory lane, announced today that it is shutting down immediately and will delete users' account content tomorrow.

Launched in 2010, the Web app extracted each moment users shared on popular social-networking services such as Facebook, Last.fm, Twitter, Foursquare, and others and combined them into one visual timeline. Posts, comments, tweets, and so on were organized by their respective dates and posted as memos under each date.

The San Francisco-based company had raised $2.5 million in venture capital but announced today in a company blog post that it is joining another company that it did not identify that would "utilize the Memolane features in an expanded way, adding more value to all the great memories captured on social media."

Our goal was to make it exciting to relive great adventures with friends. We are proud that we could bring joy to people's lives by sending out daily e-mails with fun memories from the past. As well, it has been a thrill to share in the excitement when one of our fans rediscovers a precious moment that was once lost.

It wasn't immediately clear if Memolane had been acquired by another company, and if so, who that company might be. But Memolane said the "merger" means that all accounts and their contents would be deleted Friday but noted that the content would still be available at users' original social-media sources.

The company also suggested users try formerly competing services offered by Timehop and Jolicloud.

CNET has contacted Memolane for more information and will update this report when we learn more.

The lifetime journeys of manure-based microbes

Feb. 22, 2013 ? Studies at the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are shedding some light on the microbes that dwell in cattle manure -- what they are, where they thrive, where they struggle, and where they can end up.

This research, which is being conducted by Agricultural Research Service (ARS) scientists at the agency's Agroecosystems Management Research Unit in Lincoln, Neb., supports the USDA priority of ensuring food safety. ARS is USDA's chief intramural scientific research agency.

In one project, ARS microbiologist Lisa Durso used fecal samples from six beef cattle to identify a core set of bovine gastrointestinal bacterial groups common to both beef and dairy cattle. She also observed a number of bacteria in the beef cattle that had not been reported in dairy cows, and identified a diverse assortment of bacteria from the six individual animals, even though all six consumed the same diet and were the same breed, gender and age.

In another study, Durso collaborated with ARS agricultural engineer John Gilley and others to study how livestock diet affected the transport of pathogens in field runoff from manure-amended soils. The scientists added two types of manure to experimental conventional-till and no-till fields at 1-, 2-, or 4-year application rates. The manure had been collected from livestock that had consumed either corn or feed with wet distillers grains.

After a series of simulated rain events, the team collected and analyzed samples of field runoff and determined that neither diet nor tillage management significantly affected the transport of fecal indicator bacteria. But they did note that diet affected the transport of bacteriophages -- viruses that invade bacteria -- in field runoff.

Gilley also conducted an investigation into how standing wheat residues affected water quality in runoff from fields amended with 1-, 2-, or 4-year application rates of manure. The scientists found that runoff loads of dissolved phosphorus, total phosphorus, nitrates, nitrogen, and total nitrogen were much higher from plots with residue cover. The team also observed that runoff from fields amended with 4-year application rates of manure had significantly higher levels of total phosphorus and dissolved phosphorus than fields amended with 1-year or 2-year manure rates.

Results from these studies have been published in Foodborne Pathogens and Disease, Applied and Environmental Microbiology, and Transactions of the ASABE.

Microsoft now starting wider transition from Messenger to Skype on April 8th

It turns out that Microsoft's planned March 15th transition from Messenger to Skype is more of a soft target than a hard cutoff. Microsoft will switch off desktop Messenger that day only for a "test group," the company tells ZDNet; if all goes smoothly, the transition will start in earnest with English-speaking countries on April 8th. Every desktop user should be off the boat by April 30th. Messenger will still work on mobile devices, as well as in multi-network clients like Adium or Trillian, but that's not expected to last long -- and it might get quite lonely. Most of us ultimately get a slight reprieve, but the writing is most definitely on the wall.

Too Much Salt Gets Bitter and Sour Involved

Too little salt makes for a bland meal. But too much is offensively briny. Now, scientists have discovered why too much tastes bad. The work is in journal Nature. [Yuki Oka et al., High salt recruits aversive taste pathways]

As the previous podcast noted, the cells that process taste send a unique signal to the brain for each kind of flavor. The signals for sweet and umami make animals crave more, while sour and bitter are often rejected. But saltiness is appealing in low doses and aversive at high levels. The researchers found out why: too much salt activates the cells that sense sourness and bitterness, sending unpleasant signals to the brain and transforming a tasty bite into a turn-off.

The study used mice unable to taste sourness, bitterness, or both. Animals that could still sense one of the flavors rejected overly salty water. But mice unable to taste sour and bitter were happy to lick up liquid that was far too briny for normal animals.

With salt being a variable flavor, our bodies can better keep its levels within a healthful range. And leave a good taste in the mouth.

Ken Jeong, "Halo," Red Bull take early Streamy awards

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) - Red Bull, "Epic Rap Battles of History" and a "Halo" web series have all won Streamy Awards, which recognize the year's best in online video, Dick Clark Productions and Tubefilter announced on Wednesday. The awards show takes place on Sunday, but the producers announced 19 winners in advance.

"Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn," a live-action web series set in the world of the popular video game, is the biggest winner so far with three awards. It won Best Editing (Michael Louis Hill), Best Production Design (Kasra Farahani) and Best Cinematography (Brett Pawlak). The show, which aired on the gamer-friendly Machinima Prime YouTube channel, debuted in October in advance of the release of the "Halo 4" video game.

Stewart Hendler directed the series, and though he was not nominated for his work on "Halo," he won the Best Direction Streamy for his work on the Bryan Singer-produced "H+ the Digital Series."

Two other shows are already repeat winners as well - "Epic Rap Battles of History" and ?The Lizzie Bennet Diaries."

"Epic Rap Battles," which pits figures like Hitler and Darth Vader against one another in musical one-upmanship, won "Best Music Series" and "Best Original Song." Peter Shukoff (alter ego Nice Peter) and Lloyd Ahlquist (alter ego Epic Lloyd) won the latter award for a video that pitted tech titans Steve Jobs and Bill Gates against one another. Their YouTube channel is part of the Maker Studios network.

Hank Green and Bernie Su created "The Lizzie Bennet Diaries," which won for Best Interactive Program and Best Writing for a Comedy. Su won the writing award.

The YouTube show, which stars Ashley Clements and Mary Kate Wiles, takes its name from the main character of Jane Austen's "Pride and Prejudice." The series adapted that book in video blog form, as Bennet (Clements) discusses her life and her family.

All three of those shows will contend for other awards on Sunday, as "Halo 4" is up for Best Drama Series and Best Action or Sci-Fi Series, "Bennet" is up for Best Comedy Series and Shukoff is up for Best Online Musician.

One of the most memorable physical feats of the past year took home an award, as "Red Bull Stratos" claimed the Best Live Event category. "Stratos" is the name of the space diving project that culminated in Felix Baumgartner parachuting to Earth from the stratosphere in October. Sponsored by Red Bull and live streamed on YouTube, Baumgartner both broke world records and set a YouTube record for most concurrent views of a live stream.

Other winners thus far include Ken Jeong for his guest appearance on Yahoo's "Burning Love," "Kids React" for Best Non-Fiction or Reality Series and Tony Valenzuela's writing on "Black Box TV" on the drama side of things.

Dick Clark and Tubefilter have 16 more awards to give out, including the Audience Choice Awards for Best Series and Best Personality. The show begins at 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Palladium in Hollywood.

Vijay Singh?s use of deer antler spray casts cloud over golf as PGA remains silent

LOS ANGELES ? This is one time the PGA Tour needs to avoid the perception of slow play.

It has been two weeks since the Sports Illustrated story that Vijay Singh spent US$9,000 on products that included deer antler spray, telling the magazine he used the spray ?every couple of hours ? every day? and that he was ?looking forward to some change in my body.? Singh issued a statement the next day that he used the spray and was shocked to learn it might contain a substance that is banned under the tour?s anti-doping policy.

Look, it was an honest mistake.

?Who knew there was growth hormone in deer antlers?? said Vijay Singh. ?I thought it would just make me, you know, horny ??

Ba-dum-pum.

He didn?t really say that. All horn and ?nice rack, Vijay? jokes aside, what the 49-year-old Fijian star actually said in a statement, after learning ? to his evident horror and surprise ? what was contained in the deer antler spray he?d been spritzing into his mouth every couple of hours was:

?While I have used deer antler spray, at no time was I aware that it may contain a substance that is banned under the PGA Tour Anti-Doping Policy.

Singh is still playing.

The tour is not talking, except to say it is looking into the matter.

In what is shaping up as a bright year in golf, this is becoming a dark cloud. Tiger Woods won at Torrey Pines. Phil Mickelson missed a 59 by a fraction of an inch when he won the Phoenix Open. The next week, every conversation among players at Pebble Beach seemed to start with the same question.

?What?s going to happen with Vijay??

Singh met with PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem at Pebble Beach, and then made his 15th consecutive cut.

He is playing again this week at Riviera.

The big Fijian, a week away from turning 50, is one of the more remarkable success stories on the PGA Tour. He has three major championships, a record 22 wins in his 40s and a spot in the World Golf Hall of Fame.

But he is looked upon differently now, and not just because he is the source of jokes.

One photo circulating last week showed Singh?s face photo-shopped on a deer. A magazine reported seeing Singh in the fairway at Spyglass Hill during a practice round with his caddie, trainer, manager ? and five deer that had wandered out of the woods.

Also at stake is his integrity.

It doesn?t help that Singh had to overcome allegations early in his career that he doctored his scorecard to avoid missing the cut in Indonesia. Singh, who has denied the charges, was banned by the Asian tour. It dogged him for so much of his career, even as he worked his way out of the jungle in Borneo to become No. 1 in the world.

He hasn?t won since 2008, when he was the FedEx Cup champion with back-to-back wins in the playoffs. He has been slowed by injuries the last four years. Clearly, he was trying to gain an edge with the deer antler spray and other products from Sports with Alternative to Steroids.

Singh either forgot or ignored the tour?s warning a year earlier that deer antler spray might contain an insulin-like growth hormone known as IGF-1, which has been on the list of banned substances since the program began in 2008.

Every now and then, the tour will warn the players of a substance that could get them into trouble, which is what it did in the fall of 2011.

Singh said he reviewed the list of ingredients on the antler spray and did not see any banned substances.

That?s not being very vigilant. And it?s not much of an excuse.

If he?s spending US$9,000 on products, does he not become suspicious enough to run this by the tour? Even a change in their nutrient program should be enough for players to ask questions. One player told a story Tuesday of getting a prescription for a new eye medicine. His first call was to the tour to make sure it was OK. The prescription cost US$10.

Just as much is at stake for the integrity of the tour.

Doug Barron is the only player who has been suspended under the anti-doping policy, which didn?t cause too much of a ripple because only the hard-core golf fans had even heard of him. Singh is a Hall of Famer. The longer this drags on, the more speculation that the tour treats stars differently.

What hurts the tour in this case is its longtime lack of transparency.

Finchem has decided that no news is the best news when it comes to player discipline. The tour does not disclose fines or suspensions for conduct. No one can say for certainty that Woods has ever been fined for his course language, or if Mickelson was fined last year for using his cellphone in the middle of a round at the Memorial to complain about too many cellphones in the gallery.

We know John Daly was suspended, but only because he called The Associated Press to refute rumours he had been suspended for life [it was only six months].

Players suspect that at least two of their colleagues have been suspended for testing positive for recreational drugs. If true, the tour won?t say.

Golfers are not choir boys.

What hurts the tour in this case is its longtime lack of transparency

Finchem wants to protect the image of golf, which is one reason he refuses to publicize their indiscretions, however large or small. That image is not derived exclusively from clean living, but from the very nature of the sport. It?s a congenial game, and the vast majority of the pros are respectful of the sport and those who play it. That?s why golf has such a good image, and is so appealing to the corporate world.

Under the anti-doping policy, the tour is required to disclose the name, confirm the violation and declare the penalty.

So far, there has been silence.

This is not a call for the tour to rush to judgment. Singh?s case is muddled. Yes, a player who admits to using a banned substance is the same as a player testing positive. But is there evidence that IGF-1 was in the spray that Singh was using? More than one doctor has said it?s impossible for IGF-1 to enter the blood system through a spray. And the tour does not have a blood test, anyway.

Plus, players have the right to appeal, and the policy says a hearing must take place within 45 days.

Singh brought this mess on himself, and now is the time for him to give back to the game that has provided him with so much. Singh could eliminate this distraction by taking a leave of absence until the tour sorts this out. The sooner the better.

She is currently listed as a runaway, but but authorities believe she may have been trafficked. Wilson is 5' 2" and weighs 95 pounds with green eyes, black hair with blond streak on the left side, and has three piercings on her bottom lip. Wilson has been entered into the National Crime Information Center Database as a runaway, according to the Sheriff's Office. Skylar Neese was last seen July 7th, 2012. The 16-year-old from Star City, West Virginia, was caught on surveillance footage from apartments near her home climbing out of her window around midnight. The friend admitted to picking up Skylar, and says she dropped her off approximately an hour later, down the street to avoid waking the family, after a trip to a local Wendy's. There is no footage of Skylar returning. Skylar is 5'4" tall, 135 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Austan Tyler Stone, 16, was last seen in Post Falls, Idaho on Sept. 10, when he left for school. According to a Facebook page maintained by his family, his cellphone was briefly activated in Modesto, Calif. The Post Falls Police Department has Stone listed as a <a href="http://www.spokesman.com/blogs/sirens/2012/oct/03/family-seeks-information-missing-teen/" target="_hplink">runaway juvenile</a>. Stone is 5-foot-6 and 130 pounds with green eyes and brownish-blonde hair. Jamal Omar Briggs

Briggs is described as a black male, 5-feet, 3-inches tall, weighing 135 pounds. He was last seen wearing a red heavy shirt, black jeans and black Jordan tennis shoes. Michael Suarez Jr.

Michael Suarez Jr., 19, was last seen on August 31, at his 61st St. home in Mapleton, New York. According to his aunt, Linda Suarez, her nephew is schizophrenic and he has not had his medication. Kathryn, 16 of Staten Island, New York, has been missing since Nov. 24, 2010. Her tongue is pierced and she has a scar over her left eyebrow. Kathryn may go by the nickname Kat or Kathy.

Caelan Cyrus-Howard

Caelan, of Brooklyn, New York, was last seen with his non-custodial mother on 02/21/2002. He has a scar on his forehead and his hair is braided. Caelan was last seen wearing blue jeans, a blue polo shirt and black "ACG" boots. He may be in need of medical attention. Mother and child may have traveled to Trinidad and Tobago.

Jeremiah George Huger, who has been missing since June of 1985, was playing in his yard in the Bronx, New York, with other children when an unknown black male called to the child and then grabbed him. Shauntae Hope Marks

Shauntae Hope Marks, 15, was last seen on the evening of May 4, 2012, at the Mary Manor apartment complex in Ft. Thompson, South Dakota. According to Fort Thompson police, Marks was distraught over a recent relationship and had made comments threatening to harm herself. Marks is described as a Native American female who is 5-foot-7 and weighs about 170 pounds. She has black shoulder-length hair and brown eyes and wears glasses. Marks was last seen wearing blue jeans, a white shirt with stripes, a black and gray hoodie, and blue Etnies brand tennis shoes. Timothy Pitzen

This image from Facebook shows missing 7-year-old Timothy Pitzen. Timothy is missing from Aurora, Ill., but was last seen at a water park in Wisconsin Dells, Wis. He was last known to be in the company of his mother, who has since been found deceased in Rockford, Ill.

Amir Jennings

Amir Jennings, 1, has been missing from Columbia, S.C., since Nov. 24, 2011. Family members originally filed a missing persons report for Amir and his mother, Zinah Jennings, when they could not locate them. On Christmas Eve, Zinah Jennings was involved in a car accident. The responding officer noticed that Jennings was considered a missing person. Police say that when Jennings was questioned about her son, she gave "false and inconsistent information." Police also believe Jennings has ties to the Atlanta, Ga. and Charlotte, N.C. areas. There is a $10,000 reward for the safe return of Amir. Madeleine McCann

A combination of two pictures released by Madeleine McCann's spokesperson on May 1, 2009, shows Maddie McCann at the age of 3 (L), and an 'age progression' image of what she would look like at the age of 6. Madeleine McCann disappeared on May 3, 2007, just days before her fourth birthday, from the family's holiday apartment at the Portuguese resort of Praia da Luz. Her parents were dining with friends at a nearby restaurant when she went missing. The police force continues seraching the vanished little girl.

Joshua Davis

Joshua Davis, 2, was last seen at his New Braunfels, Texas, home on Feb. 4, 2011. He was watching the movie "Toy Story" with his mother when he left the room and vanished. The toddler's mother believes her son was abducted. Sarah Kinslow

Sarah Elizabeth Kinslow, 14, was last seen by her parents on May 1, 2001, when her dad dropped her off at Greenville Middle School in her hometown of Greenville, Texas, at approximately 7:20 a.m. It was not until after the school day ended that the Kinslows were notified their daughter had not attended any of her classes. According to Louise Kinslow, her daughter had never run away in the past and was unprepared to be gone for an extended period of time when she went to school that day. Sarah Kinslow would be 25 years old today. At the time of her disappearance, she was 5-foot-4-inches tall, weighed 105 lbs., and had blonde hair and blue eyes. Her teeth were crooked and she had several ear piercings, a tattoo of the letter "I" on the inside of her ankle, a chicken pox scar on her left temple, and two chicken pox scars on her left cheek. Khaniya Margarett Roberts

Brittanee Drexel

Brittanee Drexel, of Rochester, N.Y., was 17 years old in April 2009, when she went to Myrtle Beach, S.C., on spring break. The teen was last seen by friends on April 25 of that year, when she left the Bar Harbor Hotel in Myrtle Beach to meet friends at the nearby BlueWater Resort. Surveillance footage shows Drexel arriving at the resort, then leaving roughly 10 minutes later. What happened to her after that remains a mystery. Her cell phone gave off its last signal the day after she went missing. Investigators narrowed the phone location to an area near the South Santee River in Georgetown County. To date, no sign of Drexel has been found. At the time of her disappearance, Drexel was 5 feet tall and 103 pounds. She had blue eyes and blond highlights in her hair. Trenton Duckett

In this photo released by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is a portrait of Trenton Duckett, a 2-year-old boy who was reported missing on Aug. 27, 2006, from his home in Leesburg, Fla. The boy's mother Melinda Duckett, 21, was found dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at her grandparents' central Florida home, police said. Trenton's disappearance remains a mystery.

In June 2001, a New York State judge declared Etan legally dead, clearing the way for his parents, Stanley and Julie Patz, to file a wrongful death lawsuit against Jose Antonio Ramos, a Pennsylvania inmate whom the family believes sexually molested and then killed Etan. His parents were eventually awarded a "symbolic" sum of $2 million. Ramos is presently serving a 20-year sentence for child molestation and is scheduled to be released in November 7, 2012.

Kyron Horman

Kyron Horman was 7 years old when he disappeared on June 4, 2010. His stepmother, Terri Moulton Horman, told police she last saw the little boy walking to his classroom at Skyline Elementary School in Portland, Ore. The search for Kyron has become one of the most intense in recent Oregon history and has attracted national attention. His parents have held countless vigils, passed out thousands of fliers and issued numerous public pleas, all to no avail.

Reyna Guadarrama

Reyna Guadarrama, 9, was last seen in Grayslake, Ill., on Nov. 02, 2007. She may be in the company of her non-custodial mother and an adult male. They may travel to Mexico. Hailey Dunn

Hailey Dunn, a cheerleader, was last seen in Colorado City, Texas, just after Christmas Day in 2010. Dunn's mother, Billie Dunn, 34, reported her 13-year-old daughter missing on the morning of Dec. 28, 2010. The Colorado City Middle School student had been last seen the previous afternoon. Billie Dunn's then-boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, 25, told police that the teen was going to spend the night with a friend. That friend later told police that she had not made any plans for Hailey Dunn to spend the night and was unaware that the girl was coming over. Billie Dunn later told police she had fought with her daughter before she went missing. Colorado City Police, along with the Texas Rangers, the Mitchell County Sheriff's Office and other law enforcement departments in the region, conducted several searches for Dunn but found no sign of her.

Maayimuna Nyeeleni Njayi N'Diaye

Maayimuna Nyeeleni Njayi N'Diaye, 4, was last seen in Morehead, Ky., on Jan. 1, 2012. Maayimuna was allegedly abducted by her father, Ibrahim N'Diaye. A felony warrant was issued for him on Jan. 13, 2012. They are believed to be in Mali.

Haleigh Cummings

This photo released by the Putnam County Sheriff's Office shows Haleigh Cummings, 5, of Satsuma, Fla. Haleigh was last seen at home in the early-morning hours of Feb. 10, 2009. She was reported missing about 3:45 a.m. by Misty Croslin, the then-girlfriend of Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings. Croslin told police she discovered Haleigh was missing when she woke up to use the bathroom. Law enforcement as well as private search-and-recovery groups have conducted multiple searches for Haleigh, but no sign of her has been found. Authorities have not named any suspects in the case; however, they say they have not ruled anyone out.

Kaylee Melara

Kaylee Melara, 17, was last seen in Braintree, Mass., on Jan. 14, 2011. Melara is biracial and has a tattoo on her upper right arm.
