My friend Stroppy Author was looking for my advice to writers about platforms and profile, so that she could link to it on a blog post about platforms, and she couldn?t find it. Understandably, as it isn?t on this blog. But that reminded me that there is a vast amount of info on every aspect of writing and publishing over on my ex-blog?for writers. And I thought it might help to signpost it over here, too.
So, here are some useful links to platform-related posts.
Does blogging and tweeting work if you aren?t already successful? Which comes first ? success or blogging/tweeting?
Some resources I put together for a talk I was doing on platforms for authors.
A post on making your blog work.
Aspiring authors get quite worried about creating a platform before they have a book to sell. Here is Stroppy Author?s post on that.
Here?s what I think in general: a?platform is extremely important. But it may not be the sort of platform Stroppy is thinking of when she talks about her scepticism. I agree with her scepticism, by the way, at least in relation to the type of platform she is thinking of. However, a platform doesn?t only come from social media and online stuff such as blogs. It comes from every single time a person hears you say or do or write something memorable, including a book. It comes from each time you do a good job for a publisher and they ask you to do something else. And it comes best when you just work hard and do your natural thing, whether that is public-speaking, writing books, blogging and tweeting, or a combination of them.
Sometimes it comes because your books do so well that you need do nothing else, usually because your publisher has noticed and helped your books do well, and thus the promotional circle rolls on. Kate Atkinson is an example of this ? she does no platform-type activity at all, but each book gets noticed and if she were to say something, people would hear. Her books are her platform and her publishers are the station staff.
But most of us don?t achieve that success and we need to build our platforms in other ways, whichever ways suit us and work.
And first, yes, WRITE THE DAMN BOOK! As I said here.
