Republicans discredit their own health insurance overhaul with ...

Maine Republicans are assailing President Barack Obama?s health care law by saying it amounts to a tax increase. Not only are they wrong, but it appears their memories are a little selective. Their own health insurance overhaul last year, which they will continue to champion on their campaign trails, included a tax.

If Republicans are going to argue against the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, they should first make sure they?re not also delegitimizing their own law.

The Republican argument stems from the fact that five justices agreed on Thursday that the penalty people must pay if they refuse to purchase health insurance is a kind of tax. Because Congress has taxing power, the requirement that virtually all Americans buy insurance is constitutional.

But even though the swing vote came from a conservative ? Justice John Roberts Jr. ? and even though Maine Republicans last year passed a health insurance reform bill, LD 1333, that included a provision to add a $4 charge to the monthly premium of Mainers with private coverage, some in the GOP argue the health care act is wrong because its legality is based on tax law.

?This massive tax hike will only destroy the American economy as it forces us over the financial cliff,? reads a press release from Gov. Paul LePage?s office issued after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Thursday that Obama?s health care law is constitutional.

Maine Senate President Kevin Raye, who is running for the U.S. House, called it ?an unprecedented coercive new tax.? Olympia Snowe, Maine?s retiring Republican senator, said it will ?impose an onerous tax.?

The law, however, is not projected to equate to a tax increase for the vast majority of Mainers or Americans. Most people already have insurance through their employers, Medicaid or Medicare. An Urban Institute study found that of the 26.3 million people currently uninsured, about 70 percent of them qualify for tax credits to help them pay for a qualified plan.

Just 7.3 million people, or 2 percent of the population, will not be offered financial assistance under the health care law and will be subject to penalties if they do not obtain coverage. The idea that the health care law amounts to a tax hike for many Americans is simply wrong.

In fact, studies show that the law will lower costs for Americans. The nonprofit Families USA estimates that by 2019 more than 500,000 Maine families will be better off by an average $1,685 per year because of the law.

The misinformation-spreading by Republicans comes on the heels of them actually implementing a health insurance tax. Just a year ago, their health reform law aimed to lower costs for young, healthy Mainers by putting higher-cost policyholders in a special pool and then defraying the costs of their insurance by having a monthly tax of $4 assessed on all other policyholders.

The $4 tax was designed to replace a charge on health insurance claims that Mainers paid to keep the Dirigo Health program in operation. People legitimized it by saying it would be less than the annual Dirigo assessment. But it is still a tax.

No one likes the word ?tax,? but Mainers should remember that our state?s transportation infrastructure, schools, police forces and much of our health care system all are possible because of tax dollars. Republicans should gather their facts before they claim the health care law means a tax increase. And if a health insurance tax is bad now, they should explain why it wasn?t bad in 2011.

Midway Airport back in business after power outage

Planes are flying again at Chicago's Midway International Airport after a nearly four-hour shutdown caused by a lack of runway lights.

Chicago Aviation Department spokeswoman Karen Pride says a problem with the lighting equipment caused the outage at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday. Pride says 85 flights were canceled or diverted while the airport was closed.

Flights resumed early Friday, and airlines are working to get back on schedule.

The outage didn't affect the terminals, so passengers aboard planes when the runways went dark were returned to the terminals and taken off the planes.

Commonwealth Edison spokeswoman Martha Swaney says the outage wasn't caused by a ComEd power failure, but she says the utility's crews worked with Midway's personnel to help them get their equipment working again.

Alan Jackson to Celebrate July 4 Early at Military Base in Oklahoma

Getty Images for Country Thunder

Independence Day celebrating will start a bit early for military personnel and their families stationed at Fort Sill, Okla.. Alan Jackson will put on a special show on Saturday, June 30, in honor of the July 4 holiday, with Gloriana and Easton Corbin also on the bill.

The 53-year-old country legend will undoubtedly play "Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning)," which he wrote in the aftermath of the devastating terrorist attacks on September 11. "After 9/11, I played at the Pentagon and sang 'Where Were You' sitting there looking at survivors that were still bandaged up, with their families and the people who died," Alan recounts to The Boot. "Those are some tough shows. But at the same time, it makes you feel good if people get something out of it."

The Grand Ole Opry member is currently out on the road, promoting his latest CD, Thirty Miles West, which was released earlier this month. The project's debut single, "So You Don't Have to Love Me Anymore," is in the chart's Top 30 and climbing. The song, Alan reveals, struck a chord with him the first time he heard it.

"Well, at first it raised the hair on my arms, when I heard the demo," he tells The Boot. "It was a really good version, too. It was one of those songs that, when I heard it, it's the kind of song that made me want to be in country music. I'm such a big fan of that kind of song. Sad songs, or break-up songs, and heartache songs are always the best ones to bring that emotion out and are actually the easiest to write as a writer."

Tickets for the 7:00 PM show are available to the public, and can be purchased here.

Alan will play in Colorado tonight (June 28) and Texas tomorrow night, before heading to Oklahoma. Keep track of his concert schedule here.

What is Scalping? | Forex Trading TV Video Blog

Trading on the Foreign Exchange market, or Forex, has become increasingly popular due in no small part to its sheer size and volume of trading. There was a time when only the large investment banks and other ?institutional? vehicles of finance could play in the currencies market but now it is possible for just about anyone to invest in the Forex. Just as with equities or commodities traders, investors in the Forex need some type of strategy when deciding on currency pairs and when to enter and exit a position.

?

Scalping is one of many Forex investment strategies and at its simplest involves anticipating short-term movements in the exchange rates. Forex scalpers are like the polar opposites of those who use the buy-and-hold approach because they are only looking to enter and exit a position quickly?make their profit and run. Scalpers may only hold a position for a few hours?and in the extreme cases?or mere minutes. These ?hit and run? investors look for market indicators specifically known to affect rates on the Forex.

?

National and international news events have been shown to affect currency exchange rates. In truth, the Forex trades 24 hours a day with investors all having access to real time pricing changes. Thus, a Forex scalper may only have a few minutes to enter and exit a position before the market corrects itself and factors the news into the pricing. Scalpers use key indicators to help them anticipate the price fluctuation, such as:

?

? GDP ? Gross Domestic Product
? Unemployment
? Inflation
? Trade balance
? Interest rate announcements
? Consumer/business confidence surveys
? Retail Sales

?

Government statistics tend to be more valuable to Forex scalpers for a couple of reasons. First, the U.S. dollar backs nearly 90% of all transactions on the Forex so any economic data released about this key nation will likely have some affect upon the exchange rates?at least temporarily.

?

Secondly, U.S. government statistics are considered to be some of the most reliable and accurate data that investors can get their hands on. Plus, the real benefit to scalpers is that government data are supposed to be well-guarded secrets meaning that all investors?big or small?are made aware of the same information at the same time. Because small retail Forex traders are able to raise and move capital faster than larger institutional investors, they should have the advantage when it comes to taking advantage of short-term movements in exchange rates caused by the release of new information.

?

However, it is important to understand that a Forex scalper only profits if they can actually anticipate how the market will react to the information. For instance, if an investor had a position in the USD/EUR currency pair, they might be tempted to believe that the dollar should rise relative to the Euro if the U.S. had a higher rate of GDP growth in the 4th quarter. However, the dollar might actually fall based on this information if the U.S. economy grew at a slower rate than predicted?even if this rate was still higher than the Euro growth (and if the Euro zone grew faster than predicted). Plus, even if the investor does realize which way the market should move based on the information, they still need to enter and exit the position before the information can be assimilated into the pricing.

?

Forex scalping is a very dangerous investment strategy because the market is so very volatile and positions are leveraged to the hilt. In short order, scalping can cost an investor all of their capital?and perhaps even leave their account in the red. Although a viable option, traders new to the Forex are encouraged to find another, safer strategy to use.

Rielle Hunter: 'Edwards and I are no longer a couple'

Rielle Hunter, left, is shown Aug. 6, 2009, and former U.S. senator and presidential candidate John Edwards is seen May 10, 2012.

By msnbc.com staff and news services

Rielle Hunter says she and former presidential candidate John Edwards have ended their relationship in a painful but mutual breakup.

Edwards will still be involved with their daughter, Quinn, 4 , Hunter said.

"We are a family, but as of the end of last week, John Edwards and I are no longer a couple," Hunter said on ABC?s ?Good Morning America" on Tuesday. "We decided together to end it."

Hunter said she and Edwards were still a couple until late last week, as details from Hunter's memoir became public.

Asked why the relationship ended, Hunter said, "I think that's private." She said "media scrutiny" is ?hard, and it wears you down after a while."

Edwards was not immediately available for comment to msnbc.com or other news organizations.

Her book, "What Really Happened: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me," was released Tuesday through a Dallas-based boutique publisher, BenBella Books.

In the book, The Associated Press reported, Hunter describes intimate details about her affair with Edwards, whose campaign hired her as a videographer, and sheds light on his thoughts as federal prosecutors mounted a case against him on illegal campaign contribution charges.

Prosecutors had accused the Democratic politician of masterminding a scheme to use about $1 million in secret payments from two wealthy political donors to hide his pregnant mistress as he sought the White House in 2008.

According to Hunter, Edwards told her he would probably wind up in a low-security prison in Virginia if he was convicted, and Hunter said she planned to move nearby with their daughter if that happened.

A federal jury last month acquitted Edwards on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions but deadlocked on five related charges. A judge declared a mistrial, and federal prosecutors on June 13 said they opted not to retry Edwards.

Hunter's memoir also includes intimate details about her affair with Edwards as his wife, Elizabeth, was dying of cancer. On Tuesday, Hunter said she felt it was necessary to tell the truth about her relationship, even if doing so was painful for her, Edwards or his other children.

Saying that she still loves Edwards, and that she believes he still loves her, Hunter said Tuesday that she was unsure of the future.

"We'll see what happens," she said. "I have no plans."

This human ancestor ate like a chimp

A video from Johns Hopkins University explains how teeth were analyzed to determine the diet of a 2 million-year-old human ancestor known as Australopithecus sediba.

By Alan Boyle

Researchers used a clever trio of tricks to figure out what 2 million-year-old human ancestors ate by analyzing the stuff on their teeth, and they found something unexpected: They ate more like chimpanzees than like humans. Their analysis could point to a reason why our species triumphed while some of our long-lost cousins failed.

"Our results suggest that there was more variation among hominins around 2 million years ago, in terms of what they ate and where they lived," Amanda Henry of Germany's Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology explained in an email, using the technical term for humans and their close fossil relatives.

The various species spread out into different environments, ranging from forests to grasslands, but each species had a preferred environment, in part due to diet specialization. "Then, with the evolution of Homo erectus around 1.8 million years ago, we see a big shift," Henry said. "Homo erectus thrived in a whole variety of environments, and was even able to migrate out of Africa."

Homo erectus eventually gave rise to Homo sapiens ? that is, us. Meanwhile, the hominins that were tied down to Africa's forests?? perhaps including Australopithecus sediba, the South African species that Henry and her colleagues studied ? faded away in the competition with other apes. The latest research, published online today by the journal Nature, doesn't address that big evolutionary issue directly. But it does provide plenty of food for thought.

Decoding the diet
Australopithecus sediba was discovered in 2008, and has come to be seen as a transitional species between the relatively small, ape-like pre-humans known as australopiths and our closer ancient relatives in the genus Homo. Only a few specimens of the species have been recovered, but they appear to reflect chimp-like as well as human-like characteristics.

So which way did Au. sediba swing when it came to its diet? The researchers focused on the teeth of two specimens, a juvenile male and an adult female.

First, the researchers zapped the tooth enamel with a laser and analyzed the vapor that was given off. The composition of the enamel preserves a record of what the individual ate while it was growing up. In this case, Johns Hopkins University geochemist Benjamin Passey used a mass spectrometer to look at the balance of carbon-12 and carbon-13 isotopes in the vapor.

Lee Berger

The teeth of a juvenile male Australopithecus sediba had a dark layer of calculus, which is clearly visible in this close-up picture.

If the level of carbon-12 is relatively high, that suggests a diet heavy in forest products such as leaves, fruits and the critters that eat those things. Those are known as C3 foods. But if carbon-13 is high, that points to foods from the African savanna, such as seeds, roots and grasses. These are C4 foods.

"It seems like a hallmark of human evolution to be able to use savanna resources," Passey told me. "Today, most of our energy comes from grass in one way or another, either from grain or from animals that eat grain and grass."

Tests on sediments and various animal bones suggested that the area where the specimens were found was a savanna 2 million years ago. However, when Passey analyzed the samples from Au. sediba, he found that the carbon was almost pure C3, suggesting a diet heavy in forest products.

Two other lines of evidence confirmed that preference: Deposits of plaque on the teeth contained bits of silica, known as phytoliths, that were linked to forest vegetation. Also, the pits on the teeth were characteristic of creatures that favored a forest diet. All the evidence pointed to the conclusion that these particular pre-humans went to the forests for virtually all of their food, even though their remains were left behind in the savanna.

"This astonished us," Passey said.

The meaning of diet
Upon reflection, it shouldn't be that surprising that Australopithecus sediba passed up what the African savanna had to offer, said the University of Colorado's Matt Sponheimer, another co-author of the Nature paper. "We know living apes don't seem to like such foods much ??or at least they are never a large portion of their diets," he told me in an email. "It is likely that this is at least partly due to their masticatory (and probably digestive) anatomy being suboptimal for such diets."

Modern-day savanna chimpanzees engage in similar behavior, the researchers noted.

The findings are consistent with the view that "early hominins were quite flexible with respect to diet, with different populations preferring different parts of the available plant resource base, depending on when they lived, and where," said Bill Kimbel, who serves as director of Arizona State University's Institute of Human Origins but was not involved in the Nature study. "The plant phytoliths are a nice addition to the repertoire of perspectives on the issue."

In an email exchange, Kimbel cautioned against reading too much into Au. sediba's preference, as reflected by the results from two individuals. He took issue with my suggestion that the results put the species in the "chimp camp" rather than the "human camp," and noted that other hominin species had different preferences for C3 vs. C4 foods.

"I don't think sediba should be seen as 'remarkable' in this context," he told me. "And sediba no more belongs in the 'chimp camp' than it does in the 'giraffe camp' (with which it also shares dominant C3 values). This is not a useful analogy."

Sponheimer declined to say whether he thought Australopithecus sediba died out because it didn't shift its diet to the foods of the savanna, "but one could make such an argument if indeed this was an organism tied to very specific microhabitats by a limited dietary repertoire." A different argument could be made as well: Perhaps the descendants of Au. sediba eventually adapted to a diet that took in C4 as well as C3 foods, and thus contributed to the rise of early Homo.

Passey, for one, would love to study more specimens. "It would be nice to analyze those and see if all members of that species have that same forest behavior," he told me. However those future experiments turn out, the findings reported today show how novel techniques ? ranging from precision laser blasting to tooth-crud analysis ? can?shed light on the origin of our species. ??

More about human origins:

In addition to Henry, Sponheimer and Passey, the authors of "The Diet of Australopithecus Sediba" include Peter S. Ungar, Lloyd Rossouw, Marion Bamford, Paul Sandberg, Darryl J. de Ruiter and Lee Berger. The paper, published online today, will appear in a future print edition of Nature.

Queen begins N.Ireland trip, to meet ex-IRA chief

(AP) ? Queen Elizabeth II is beginning a two-day visit to Northern Ireland celebrating the British territory's hard-won peace in a town that suffered one of the IRA's worst massacres.

The British monarch's planned meeting Wednesday with former Irish Republican Army commander Martin McGuinness comes the day after her visit to Enniskillen, where a no-warning IRA bomb in 1987 killed 11 Protestant civilians and wounded 63 others as they commemorated British dead from the two world wars.

The queen is expected to meet survivors and relatives of the dead alongside religious services in Enniskillen's neighboring Protestant and Catholic cathedrals.

Worldwide revulsion at the Enniskillen massacre spurred McGuinness and other IRA chiefs to begin sounding out peace terms with the British. That quarter-century journey is to end with a Belfast handshake.

Willingham's HR off Chapman tops Reds

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:21 p.m. ET June 24, 2012

CINCINNATI (AP) - Josh Willingham paid close attention to Joe Mauer's at-bat, then came up with a clutch hit of his own.

Willingham belted a long two-run homer off shaky Cincinnati closer Aroldis Chapman in the ninth inning, rallying the Minnesota Twins to a 4-3 victory over the Reds on Sunday.

Mauer lined a one-out double off the wall in left before Willingham connected for his 15th homer, a 438-foot drive into the second level in left.

"It was fun to watch Joe's at-bat. It set the tone for the inning," Willingham said. "I was looking for something over the middle hard and the pitch was over the middle and it was hard. I tried to stay short with my swing. You don't swing early but just try to make it shorter."

Chapman (4-4) yielded a game-ending, two-run homer to Asdrubal Cabrera in his previous outing, a 3-2 loss at Cleveland on Tuesday. The lanky left-hander is 0-4 with three blown saves and an unseemly 11.37 ERA in his last seven games.

Willingham's homer came after Joey Votto hit a two-run shot to put the Reds in front in the eighth.

"If you need a fastball hitter in those situations, Josh is the guy," Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. "Mauer's a great hitter. He can do things that others can't against a pitcher who throws above the speed limit."

Chapman struck out Darin Mastroianni to start the inning, then threw two quick strikes to Mauer. But Mauer worked the count full before coming up with the big hit.

"I tried to stay short. It's tough in interleague because you haven't seen the pitchers before and you don't know how the ball moves," Mauer said. "The guy's got a heck of an arm and has good movement on his pitches. I was trying to put the barrel on the ball. A guy that throws that hard supplies most of the power."

Scott Diamond (6-3) allowed three runs and eight hits in eight innings for Minnesota. The left-hander struck out seven and also hit two batters.

The home run by fellow Canadian Votto was disheartening to the rookie.

"I felt I made a good pitch," Diamond said. "From that pitch to Willingham going off it was pretty suspenseful but we remained positive."

Former Reds reliever Jared Burton, subbing for ailing closer Matt Capps, worked the ninth for his first career save. Capps had a setback with his sore shoulder.

Burton spent the last five seasons in Cincinnati. He opted for free agency when the Reds wanted to send him to the minor leagues last September; then signed with Minnesota two months later.

"The last out was pretty intense," he said. "I had a little extra adrenaline going but I tried to tell myself the pressure was on the hitter because they were the ones losing."

Burton walked Todd Frazier to start the ninth. Frazier moved up on Willie Harris' sacrifice and Burton walked pinch-hitter Scott Rolen before Chris Heisey flied out on the first pitch and Wilson Valdez bounced into a fielder's choice.

"I had to be careful with Rolen," Burton said. "He's a professional hitter. I felt like I made good pitches the rest of the inning."

Mike Leake pitched eight solid innings for Cincinnati, surrendering just five hits. He struck out five, walked none and had just 86 pitches when manager Dusty Baker went to Chapman for the ninth.

"That's Chapman's job," Baker said. "Leake just came off throwing 112 pitches his last time out. Everybody's got a job. What if I send Leake out and he gives it up? The hitters coming up would have seen him for the fourth time."

The Reds dropped to 7-8 in interleague play this season and 104-131 all-time. The Twins finished 9-9 this year and are 157-125 all-time.

The NL Central leaders grabbed the lead in the fourth. Devin Mesoraco hit a leadoff double, moved up on Leake's sacrifice and scored on Wilson Valdez's two-out single.

Trevor Plouffe responded with his 15th homer, a 385-foot drive to right-center that tied it with one out in the fifth.

There has been at least one homer at Great American Ball Park for 62 consecutive games, the longest current streak in the majors.

Justin Morneau's run-scoring groundout put the Twins in front in the seventh, but Votto's 14th homer made it 3-2 in the eighth.

NOTES: Capps will be examined on Monday after the Twins return from their road trip. The team was discussing possible roster moves, Gardenhire said. ... Minnesota definitely will add a pitcher as a 26th player for a scheduled doubleheader Saturday against Kansas City, Gardenhire said. ... Minnesota CF Denard Span, hitless in his last 10 at-bats, was out of the starting lineup. Ben Revere moved from right field to center. ... Reds SS Zack Cozart, who had one hit in 14 at-bats over his last three games, rested. Valdez started in his place.

Book Reviews Are for Kids: Meet the Next Generation of Book Critics ...

once a week I devote this column to Y.a. literature with a focus on the growing trend of grownups reading the category. Today there's a twist on that theme, but like reading Y.a., it's as pertinent to adults as it is to kids. There's something new happening in the book business: Kids are getting into the world of book reviews, offering up commentary and criticism on the Y.a. and children's books that were, after all, intended for them.?

Beloved bookstore McNally Jackson, located in new York's SoHo neighborhood, has a Kids Tumblr upon which there are currently four book reviews from young readers. Among the books reviewed are Son, Lois Lowry's upcoming fourth book in the Giver quartet, as well as Chris Colfer's the Land of stories and Rebecca Stead's Liar & Spy. there are also reviews in the works from more than a dozen kids ranging in age from 8 to 19 years old?upcoming titles include Defiance by C.J. Redwine, the great Unexpected by Sharon Creech, and Don't Turn Around by Michelle Gagnon.

Sarah Gerard, who runs the children's section at McNally Jackson, spoke to the Atlantic Wire about the program, an idea she'd heard of some other bookstores implementing. To help get more teens to engage in the store, she reached out to local schools and to kids who frequent the store, and posted her call for young book reviewers on the McNally Jackson Tumblr and on Twitter. after three weeks, Gerard has a list of 18 young readers who have been assigned galleys and deadlines for their reviews (they have until the books' actual release dates to turn in their write-ups).

Gerard, who's also an author, is functioning as an editor as well as a kind of book mentor in this pursuit. she says, "I?don't criticize what they're saying or say it's wrong. Even if they don't like the book, I tell them, just make sure you support what you're thinking." the value of this program is multi-faceted. for one, "Kids are much better at selling books to other kids," she says: "they know what they like, it's more about making it theirs, and they get to choose what they want to read. I think it's important for kids to talk about books, these books are for them, and the things kids are saying aren't necessarily appearing in print."

Kate Milford, a Y.a. and middle-grade author who works part-time at McNally Jackson as well, told us of the program, "I only wish I'd thought of the idea first. It's brilliant. for one thing, although nominally these books are being written for kids and teens, they're shaped and guided at all stages by adult readers trying to guess at how they'll be received by adults and what adults will take from them, whether those adults are the sales and marketing team, the reps, the buyers, or the teachers and librarians. I don't think anyone forgets what the target audience is, it's just that it never gets to that audience if, for instance, a marketing team can't figure out how a sales rep is going to talk about it to a buyer?. Adults make their best guesses, but ultimately they're a bunch of grownups trying to get back into teen brains, which are, of course, like the brains of some other species. Publishers would do well to find a way to get some smart teens on call."

Gerard points out as well that the timing of the program coincides nicely with the summer?parents, this is a way to keep kids reading over vacation! And there's that social media/Internet aspect as well, which "legitimizes the [young critics'] work," says Gerard. "People are reblogging them?we're bringing up the next generation of readers and writers. I'm really proud of them, I think they're really great." Milford adds, "I know from having used young beta-readers for my own work that their insights are stunning and their understanding of text comes from (often times) a completely different place than even the most sympathetically-minded older reader. having teens read and comment on text is remarkably eye-opening, both as a writer and as someone who needs to know how best to tell other young readers why a particular book could be just what they're looking for."

but don't take it from the grownups' perspective alone. We got to ask a few of the kid reviewers?Rachel Phelps, 16, and Noah and Luisa Pellettieri, who are 11 and 8, respectively, what they had to say about it. (Noah and Luisa's mom, Amy, weighs in as well.)

How did you hear about McNally's program??is this the first book you've reviewed, other than in school reports? Rachel: I heard about the program through Twitter. I follow several publishing companies, and one of them retweeted one of McNally's tweets that said they needed teen book reviewers. I've done a couple book reviews for fun that I've posted on my personal blog, but this is the first review I've ever done for someone.?I decided to participate in the reviews because I love reading, and I love writing about what I'm reading, so this was a perfect opportunity! Amy:?one day when we were in the bookshop we started a conversation with one of the bookstore workers and she told us about the book reviewing program. Noah and Luisa had never written a book review before, but since they love to write, and are such amazing readers, we thought we would give it a try! Plus, there is the added benefit of getting a free book!?

How did you write your review? Any particular process?? Rachel:?I keep the book next to me so I can refer to it if I need to. McNally sent a guideline for writing the reviews, so that really helps. I just think about what stuck out to me, and write about it. Luisa and Noah: the bookstore gave us a handout about how to write a review and we kind of followed it. Noah: Me and Luisa both tried really hard to make a good review and we tried to think about the audience as much as possible. I think we did the reviews right because I was satisfied with the way I wrote mine and I read Luisa's and it was great, too.? Luisa: I just kind of write, I don't think about it too much. but I did want to try to be friendly.

Why did you pick the book you did? did reviewing it make you feel differently about it than you expected? Rachel: I picked?Belles?because I'm a huge fan of Jen Calonita, and I figured that if it was anything like her other books, I'd love it. Reviewing it helped me to understand the characters better and really allowed me to dig in deeper. Luisa: I picked the book I reviewed [Chris Colfer's] because I like reading fairytales. I read the books and looked at the back of the books to see if it would be interesting to me. Writing the review didn't really make me think differently about ?the book.? Noah: I picked my book because I love the author who wrote my book [Rebecca Stead]. That's really one of my favorite ways to pick out books to read even at the library. Reviewing didn't make me feel any different about the book, but if it counts it did make me think differently about writing reviews. I expected it to be very easy but I ended up discovering that it is so much harder and more complex process than I thought it to be.? Luisa: I thought reviewing books was easier than I thought. I thought I would forget what I read about the book, and I wouldn't be able to do it, and I would only be able to write a sentence on it. but than I noticed that if you just categorize the parts of the books into a few groups, you could make them into something. And turn those sentences into a paragraph?. And if you can't do that, than you can go back to the book and read the section to understand it.

What do you think a review by a teen or kid can do that a review by adults can't do? Rachel: When something is written by adults, for kids/teens, it almost feels? forced, I guess you could say. I'm not knocking reviews written by adults, but it's always easier to take someone's word for it when the targeted demographic is the one reviewing.? Luisa: You can make the review more creative and kid friendly. Noah: A kid knows the audience they are speaking to better than any adult can. When I was trying to write my book review, I was just trying to think about what an average kid reading my book review would think. would it be too boring? it definitely made my review a lot more exciting. but grownups just can't do that, I guess.

What are your favorite books of all time??what about so far this year?? Rachel: Oh, gosh? the?Harry Potter?series is definitely up there. so are?a Wrinkle in Time,?the?Percy Jackson?series,?Redeeming Love?by Francine Rivers,?Breadcrumbs?by Anne Ursu, and?Smile?by Raina Telgemeier. Some of my favorite books that I've read this year are?the Book Thief?by Markus Zusak,?When You Reach Me?by Rebecca Stead, and?Looking for Alaska?by John Green. Luisa: Gosh, that is hard. I do have a favorite author. Avi. I love Avi. he just writes his books with such a creative feeling to them and he makes you want to savor them and read them again and again. I also like Shel Siverstein.? Noah: I have a few. I like Avi like Luisa. I also like Daniel Pinkwater and Sherlock Holmes. I've read lots of his books. I like the Artemis Fowl series. It's hard to say what my favorite book is. though I do love the Mysterious Benedict Society. the first book was the best of them all. I like them all for different reasons. I like Daniel Pinkwater for his silliness and weirdness. yet, I like Sherlock Holmes books for their seriousness and extremely complex cases. I love Artemis Fowl because it just makes me want to keep reading more.

Do you have a favorite genre? If so, what and why? Rachel: My favorite genre is probably fantasy. I love fairy tales, dystopian societies, and worlds that are just unlike our own. It's great to open a book and be swept away somewhere completely unknown. Realistic fiction is a close second. Luisa: I like fairytales because they have fantasy but if written well the characters will have real feelings.?And though they are not there with you, you feel as if you are going on a journey with them. Noah: My favorite genre might be mysteries. This will sound dumb, but my favorite part is the big reveal at the end. You almost think, how could I have been so stupid and not figured it out? all the clues come into place, and I love that feeling.

What do you think when you hear about adults reading Y.a. or kids books? Rachel: I think it's great that adults are reading Y.a. and children's books! My mom is an elementary school teacher, and she always says that you're never too old for a good book. Just because a book is targeted toward teens or kids shouldn't hinder you from reading it. Noah: I think it's a great idea. I think that some books just have no age limit and that everyone can pick up something from them. I think grownups do it all the time whether they realize it or not. I don't know how many times I have seen kids and grownups reading the Harry Potter series right next to each other. Luisa: I think grownups should read kids books because it kind of reminds them of what it was like when they were a kid. it is just fun for everyone. Sometimes no matter how much you read a book, it is always exciting and fun. Sometimes it can get boring. but sometimes when you pick up a book after having put it down for a long time, it's just as fun as if you had just started reading it.? Amy: I think it's great that no and Lu get the chance to review books. Seeing your words put into print is pretty cool. the author of Lu's book even reposted her review on his blog. she was so excited, she brought the review to school to share. Isn't that what you want? Seeing kids get excited about writing? Oh, and Noah and Luisa wrote the reviews all by themselves. they hope to be book reviewers for McNally for a long, long, long time!?

Firebrand cleric says Iraqi PM should resign

NAJAF, Iraq (AP) ? The firebrand Iraqi cleric whose followers are a swing vote in the nation's ongoing government crisis said Sunday that the prime minister should resign if he cannot produce reforms.

In a rare and wide-ranging press conference, hardline Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr admonished the Shiite-led government, saying it has shut Iraq's minorities out of power and failed to fix legal systems and other public services.

As a result, and to jumpstart the nation's all but paralyzed government, al-Sadr said he is prepared to direct his party's 40 lawmakers to support a no confidence vote against Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki ? so long as he is assured other political blocs in parliament provide the rest of the 163 votes needed.

His declaration delivers a sharp blow to al-Maliki's efforts to hold on to power. The Shiite prime minister kept his job after 2010 national elections failed to produce a clear winner only with grudging support from al-Sadr, an old nemesis.

"If the head is reformed, everything beyond it is reformed," al-Sadr said about ways to fix the government.

He added: "I do not support a no confidence vote if it hurts the Iraqi people. But the no confidence (vote) is not what has delayed the government from doing its duty."

Al-Sadr has flirted with the prospect of abandoning Maliki for months. The two men have a bitter personal history, going back to when government forces targeted al-Sadr's militia at the peak of the 2006-2008 sectarian fighting that almost pushed the country into civil war.

An adviser to al-Maliki, Ali al-Moussawi, declined to comment on al-Sadr's statements.

However, the prime minister's aides have previously predicted any vote to replace al-Maliki would fall short ? as has Iraqi President Jalal Talabani, a Kurd.

Also Sunday, an Iraqi press freedom group condemned authorities for ordering the closure of 44 news organizations, including a U.S.-funded radio station. The country's media commission said it was only targeting unlicensed operations.

No media outlet is reported to have been forced to close so far. But critics say al-Maliki, whom they accuse of sidelining and silencing opponents in order to consolidate his Shiite party's power, is sending a warning to the media.

The dispute calls into question the future of Iraq's fledgling democracy, nine years after the ouster of Saddam Hussein and six months after the last of the U.S. troops who overthrew him withdrew.

Ziyad al-Aajely, head of the Journalistic Freedoms Observatory, called the move to shut down media offices "a setback to the freedom of journalism in Iraq."

"It is a government message to the media outlets that if you are not with us, then you are against us," he said by telephone.

The list, which officials say was compiled a month ago, only became public on Sunday.

Most of the 44 newspapers, radio and television stations targeted for shutdown are Iraqi, although foreign broadcasters including the BBC and Voice of America were on the list as well as the U.S.-funded Radio Sawa. The BBC and Voice of America have already closed most permanent news operations in Iraq.

Safaa Rabie, the head of Iraq's Communications and Media Commission, said the commission only seeks to close offices without an operating license. He confirmed the commission had forwarded the list to the Ministry of Interior seeking help in shutting the offices down.

"It is an organizational matter, not a crackdown on the press," Rabie said.

However, one broadcaster targeted for shutdown, U.S.-funded Radio Sawa, says it does have a license.

"We were surprised to see our radio station on the list because we think that we work in accordance with all Iraqi laws," Sawa deputy director Salah Nasrawi said.

Radio Sawa ? operated by Middle East Broadcasting Networks, Inc., which is funded by the U.S. Congress ? was broadcasting normally on Sunday.

(AP) ? River Highlands has been the sight of the first PGA Tour win for four of its last six tournament champions.

Roland Thatcher and Englishman Brian Davis would like to make it five of seven.

Davis shot a 6-under 64, and Thatcher had a 65 on Saturday to share the third-round lead in the Travelers Championship at 12 under.

Davis said he's not sure why this tournament, which comes a week after the U.S. Open, has been so good to relative unknowns.

"Obviously, some of the big players aren't here, but there is still a really good field here," Davis said. "It's just one of them things. I've had a couple of weeks off, maybe I'm not as tired as the other guys. But, I'll take my win anywhere. I don't care where it is."

Davis made an early move, shooting a 29 on the front nine with six birdies. Thatcher overtook him with three straight birdies on the back nine and had a one-stroke lead before missing a 7-foot par putt on the 17th hole.

"I executed just really well in that stretch," Thatcher said. "It's easy to say they're easy holes, and that's what you should do, but you still have to execute."

Seventeen other players were within five strokes of the lead entering the final round.

John Rollins, James Driscoll and Stuart Appleby were two strokes back. Defending champion Fredrik Jacobson, who led after two rounds, shot an even-par 70 to remain at 9 under.

Davis said his fast start was helped by the thunderstorms that pushed the finish of the second round to Saturday morning and softened up the greens.

"I didn't even realize I had shot 29," said Davis, who has been a runner-up on the PGA Tour five times. "I was just playing and everything was going right. Then obviously we hit the turn and we had the wind pick up for about three holes and it was playing tough all of the sudden."

The first-time winners at River Highlands include Jacobson last year, Bubba Watson (2010), Hunter Mahan (2007) and J.J. Henry (2006).

But Thatcher said he's not worried about that.

"I figure when I play well, I'll play well and hopefully it's going to be enough to keep the job every year," he said. "This week will go a long way towards that."

Appleby, by contrast, is looking for his 10th tour win after making just one bogey in his round. The 41-year-old Australian said he's happy to be considered the old veteran among the young guns vying for the championship.

"It would be good to get back in the winner's circle, he said. "The only cut I've made has been shaving for a long time. I played better golf when I was a rookie out here, and that's just not right."

Jacobson recovered from a bogey on 17 to birdie the final hole and stay within striking distance as he attempts to join Phil Mickelson, the 2001 and 2002 winner, as the only players to successfully defend a title at River Highlands.

"I'm really happy being three behind going into tomorrow rather than five or six," he said. "I'll take the positives."

Watson also is in the mix, one of four players at 8-under par. He had a 15-foot birdie putt to go 10-under at the 17th hole, but hit the ball five feet past the hole and then missed the return shot.

"It broke about 6 feet, maybe a gust of wind or something, and then when I putted it back up it either bounced or broke right and it shouldn't do that, obviously, because it went one way and then the other," Watson said.

Seventy-seven players spent Saturday morning finishing their second rounds after thunderstorms halted play early on Friday.

J.B. Holmes, who underwent brain surgery last September, finished the morning with 62, the second best round of his career. But he followed that a few hours later with a 75 and was nine strokes behind the leaders.

Camilo Villegas shot a second round 64 and shot 70 on Saturday afternoon. Villegas, who has three top-25 finishes this season, was four behind the leaders.

"It's nice to see my name up on the leader board," he said. "It's been a tough year and it's always good to play good."

Eighty-eight players made the cut at even par. But former UCLA star Patrick Cantlay wasn't among them. He shot a 67 on Saturday morning to finish 2 over in the first tournament of his professional career.

"I struggled on the first day and never really recovered," he said.

Cyborg system stifles your need to drink water

3 hrs.

The Japanese design studio Takram was asked to design a water bottle for people to use after a hypothetical future environmental disaster. Takram, imagining what a world would be like with rising sea levels and radioactive disasters, thought that we probably wouldn?t be carrying around water bottles. Instead, they designed an entirely new organ system, to be implanted in the body, that would mean we used less water in the first place.

Its solution, called the Hydrolemic System, involves both harvesting more moisture from the air than our current unmodified bodies are capable of, and also doing more to retain the water we have. The company imagines that system would require us to drink 0.1 cups of water a day.

Inserts that go in our noses convert moisture in the air we breathe into water, and other inserts at the ends of our renal and digestive systems keep water from leaving by those routes. A collar on our neck helps prevent perspiration by turning our body heat into electricity, so it doesn?t make us perspire, losing precious liquid.

Click through the slide show for more details.

Let's?hope for a world in which our designers are just designing water bottles with more convenient handles, rather than ones you have to go to the hospital to have installed.
