Home construction market picks up -- WCLO

JANESVILLE ? The good news is that new home construction in Janesville is on a pace for its best year since 2008.

The bad news is that local building permit numbers since 2008 have been abysmal.

"Things are definitely looking better," said Kevin Ferguson, owner of Ferguson Custom Homes and president of the South Central Wisconsin Builders Association.

"I think we're starting to climb out, but we still have a long way to go."

From January through June, local builders pulled 29 permits to build single- and two-family homes, according to city of Janesville records. For all of 2011, they pulled just 31.

The local trend is mirrored at the county and state levels.

In Rock County, 40 permits were pulled in the first five months of the year compared with 66 for all of 2011. Statewide, the number of permits for the first five months was 42 percent of last year's total.

Ferguson said the numbers are somewhat skewed locally by the fact that one builder?Preferred Homes?has pulled the majority of the local permits.

Many of the Preferred Homes permits are for spec homes, those built without a committed buyer.

"It's skewed, but it's still progress," Ferguson said, noting that the lending climate favors buyers seeking traditional mortgages over new construction loans.

Bill Bohn, owner of Preferred Homes, said that while many of the homes his company is building are spec homes, the number of pre-solds has increased this year.

Through early July, Preferred had about 73 percent of the new construction market in Janesville.

"We've been fortunate this year," he said. "Last year was probably our worst, and we probably had 75 percent of the market, but we went two years without a pre-sold house.

"This year, we've had eight that are built specifically for people rather than on spec."

Bohn's company builds homes on a basis of strict cost controls. It owns all of its lots, which to a certain extent allows it to control the sale price. In addition, Preferred uses Realtors as its sales force, maintains an inventory of available homes and offers turnkey financing that eliminates the need for construction loans.

"It's still very hard to get a construction loan, and I don't think that will change until there's a change in government," Ferguson said. "The banks' hands are tied by government regulations, low appraisals and underwriters.

"I think a lot of people are waiting to see what will happen with the election. Interest rates are still low, but if you can't qualify for a construction loan, it doesn't matter if the money is free."

Bohn said he shares Ferguson's frustrations with the lending markets. His company has recently built new homes on which appraisals didn't meet the price of the new home.

Ferguson said more local builders are getting work, and they're encouraged by improvements in the local real estate market that includes growing sales of existing homes and higher prices for those sales.

"We need that end of the market to keep moving," he said. "If people are successful selling their starter home, maybe they will move up and build a house.

"We're also seeing movement in the sale of houses in the $220,000 to $230,000 range. That's good for me and the custom builders I compete with who don't built low-end homes."

Ferguson also said subcontractors and vendors in his association are starting to report more consistent work.

"Things are better, but we have a long way to go," he said. "At least we're starting on a slow, gradual climb out of this. It's been tough."

Bohn agrees that the local housing market is seeing signs of improvement. He's uncertain, however, if it will ever return to its historic highs.

"It's particularly difficult in Janesville, which got hit with a double whammy when General Motors left, and then the economy went down the tubes," he said. "It will take a long time to recover from that."

Confidence in local market improvements is echoed at the national level, where the National Association of Home Builders reported earlier this month that builder confidence reached its highest level since March 2007.

"This is greater evidence that the housing market has turned the corner as more buyers perceive the benefits of purchasing a newly built home while interest rates and prices are so favorable," Barry Rutenberg, the organization's chairman, said in a news release.

David Crowe, the group's chief economist, said improving builder confidence is combining with other improving housing indicators is lead the economy out of recession.

"This is particularly encouraging at a time when other parts of the economy have begun to show softness and is all the more reason that the challenges constraining housing's recovery?namely overly tight lending conditions, poor appraisals and the flow of distressed properties onto the market?need to be resolved," he said.

Spain not mulling seeking further EU help: sources

MADRID (Reuters) - Spain is not considering seeking immediate help from the European Union to ease its spiraling borrowing costs, two Spanish sources said on Thursday, although the euro zone is eyeing possible action for later this year.

With the troika of international lenders due to report back to European authorities on the parlous situation in Greece in September and a challenging autumn in terms of funding for Madrid, top euro zone policymakers are discussing ways to shield the currency union from further contagion.

Spanish borrowing costs this week hit record highs since the launch of the euro 13 years ago, while Italy's are back at levels not seen in several months.

Spain's 10-year bonds were trading at around 7.4 percent on Thursday, down from around 7.7 percent in previous days, although this level is still seen as unsustainable.

Sources in Madrid denied German and Italian newspaper reports on Thursday that it was on the point of asking the euro zone's EFSF rescue fund for help via buying bonds.

"Neither a total rescue of the Spanish economy nor a bond-buying program from the EFSF is being looked at," said one of the Spanish sources.

Another source said the government was focused on getting the decisions from the last European union summit implemented as well as on recapitalizing its banks for which it sought an up to 100-billion-euro European credit line in June.

"We have to respect the times, the rhythms. Spain sought aid for the banks on June 9 and we only signed the final agreement this week ... The government is not looking at that (further rescue)," said the second source.

"Some instruments are not even up and running. It would not make sense to make statements about mechanisms which doesn't exist," the source added.

Although dramatic decisions do not look imminent, there is clearly a lot of thinking being done across the euro zone. Italian and Spanish yields slid on Wednesday after European Central Bank policymaker Ewald Nowotny said he could see grounds for giving the future euro zone bailout fund a banking license so that it could draw on ECB funds.

A senior European Union official told Reuters Spain may need help with its primary market bond sales to take the pressure off its yields. But its partners, notably Germany, were doubtful.

"While it's true that taking such action was provided for in the agreement at the last summit, there is a deep reluctance to go ahead with it, not least from Germany," the official said.

"The concern is that stepping in to buy bonds is going to further destabilize market dynamics at a sensitive time. It could have the contrary effect to what's intended and no one wants to make things worse for Spain or Italy."

Policymakers fear intervention could lead to either a buyers' strike or a profound dislocation with the secondary market that simply scares off international investors.

Italian newspaper Il Sole 24 Ore said on Thursday a request by Spain to tap the euro zone's rescue funds was imminent.

Spain would agree to a number of commitments not much different from those undertaken as part of the memorandum of understanding it signed for the bank bailout, the paper said, adding the EFSF could start buying bonds almost immediately.

The permanent European Stability Mechanism (ESM) would take over once it comes into force later in the year.

German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung quoted another European diplomat as saying the EFSF could also be used to buy Spanish bonds from private banks to boost demand and reduce the state's burden. It said Germany was not opposed to the idea.

As pressure mounts on the euro zone authorities to step in to support Spain and Italy, Belgium said the ECB should be able to support struggling member states directly, if such a request was made.

Such a move would only be possible if member states asking the ECB for assistance would commit to a program to bring down their deficits, Belgium's Foreign Minister Didier Reynders, who served as the country's finance minister between 1999 and 2011, told a group of European journalists.

He also said Spain should seek more EU assistance.

"We only received one request from Spain: money for the banks. I am not sure it will be enough. I see that there are now problems in the regions. The government has to say it needs more. Not necessarily money. Maybe it would be useful to ask for more time to comply with the commitments. Or seek more money. Maybe it would be useful to organize something with the ECB," he was quoted as saying in Spanish newspaper El Pais.

Qaeda says Iraq bloodshed marks new campaign

Al-Qaeda's front group in Iraq said Wednesday that a wave of attacks that killed 113 days earlier marked the launch of a new offensive, as officials said five people died in a car bomb north of Baghdad.

The spate of violence nationwide on Monday, which also wounded more than 250 people, was the worst to hit Iraq in more than two and a half years and shattered a relative calm that had held in the lead-up to the holy Muslim fasting month of Ramadan.

On Wednesday, the Islamic State of Iraq claimed the attacks in a statement posted on jihadist forum Honein.

"As part of the new military campaign aimed at recovering territory given up by the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI), the war ministry has sent its sons and the mujahedeen on a sacred offensive during the month of Ramadan," the group said.

"The operation by the jihadists has stunned the enemy and made him lose his head. It has demonstrated the failings of the security and intelligence services," it continued.

Last weekend, the group said it would look to retake territory, and appealed for Sunni tribes to provide support and send fighters, in an Internet audio message purportedly left by its leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.

The message posted on various jihadist forums said the ISI would begin targeting judges and prosecutors, and try to help its prisoners break out of Iraqi jails.

"We are starting a new stage," said the voice on the audio message, purportedly that of Baghdadi.

Al-Qaeda in Iraq is regarded by Iraqi officials as significantly weaker than at the peak of its strength in 2006 and 2007, but it is still capable of spectacular mass-casualty attacks across the country.

Late Tuesday, meanwhile, a car bomb in the town of Ad-Dawr, in Salaheddin province north of Baghdad, killed the wife and four children of a police captain, police and medics said.

The attack came a day after Monday's spate of bombings and shootings, which drew widespread international condemnation.

The wave of violence consisted of at least 29 separate attacks in 19 cities, with most of the unrest concentrated in Baghdad and areas north of the capital.

In the deadliest incidents -- a string of roadside bombs and a car bomb followed by a suicide attack targeting emergency responders in the town of Taji, just north of Baghdad -- at least 42 people were killed and 40 wounded, medical officials said.

US State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters Washington strongly condemned the attacks.

"The targeting of innocents is always cowardly," she said. "It's particularly reprehensible during this holy month of Ramadan."

The violence also drew condemnation from the United Nations special envoy to Iraq, the country's parliament speaker, as well as France, Canada and neighbouring Iran.

Monday's toll was the highest since December 8, 2009, when 127 people were killed.

Google adds calculation tools to math search results

Google's search box is a handy place not just for finding websites, but for nearly any query. Quick calculations have been possible to input for years, but Google has just upgraded its results to include extra tools, such as a full calculator and dropdown boxes for unit conversions.

The changes are part of an ongoing enrichment of search results, the most visible of which is the Knowledge Graph, announced some months back. Knowledge Graph, and now the scientific calculator and unit conversion tool, provide instant results that can be further investigated should your original query not prove adequate.

Some functions?but not others are included; algebraic functions will show a graph but no calculator, and some conversion items aren't supported yet. For instance, converting cubits into fathoms does not yield a handy archaic measurements dropdown menu yet.

Google isn't publicizing these small improvements the way they did Knowledge Graph and other new features, so don't be surprised if a new tool pops up during one of your routine searches.

Tell us about yourself: I'm Heidi. Married now for nearly 25 years to a sweet man who challenges, supports and loves me unconditionally. When did you start scrapbooking? I started scrapbooking back in the 1970's in a magnetic album. Eventually that evolved into traditional paper scrapbooking and a room full of supplies that will take me a lifetime to use. I got into digital scrapping in Nov 2009 but still enjoy the paper scrapping when I have time.

What do you like about digital scrapbooking? The convenience of it and how easy it is to switch things around when things aren't looking so good.

For the past several days, our children have been visiting grandparents, leaving Sarah and myself at home without any children around.

The biggest difference is the quiet. Our house is so quiet now that it?s almost unnerving. When the children are around, there is so much laughing and singing and talking and playing that there?s almost always noise of some sort going on in our house during the day.

Without them, it?s quiet. It?ll be a strange thing to get used to when they grow older.

Q1: ?Waskuya? (corn)
When I worked on a Sioux reservation here, I learned an even cheaper way to enjoy sweet corn all year round. The ladies made ?waskuya? or dried corn all summer and saved it to eat during winter, making yummy corn soup. You take a mess of sweet corn, blanch it, take off the kernels with a tablespoon so you get all of the sweetness down to the cob, then spread it out on bedsheets on the grass. You walk around turning it every now and then so it dries evenly, then save it in jars or plastic containers or whatever you have. No freezer required. I?ve heard the Navajo ladies who have access to the oilfields and have made some bucks even sew it into bags like pillowcases and use their clothes dryers! A dehydrator would work too, but would use a lot of electricity over the summer.

Drying corn is a really good idea. Dried sweet corn still works as a really good ingredient in meals that cook for a while and allow the corn kernels to rehydrate.

I?ve used dried corn myself in many recipes, though I?ve never made it myself (it?s been gifted to me).

Given that many people don?t have the uninterrupted yard space (meaning devoid of children and pests) to use the ?drying on a sheet? trick, the dryer technique seems particularly useful.

Q2: Illegal income
A few days ago, I found out that a significant portion of my husband?s income over the last few years has come about as the result of [an illegal activity].

I?m really unsure how this affects our finances. Should we have a larger emergency fund? What about taxes?

I had to edit this email quite a bit so that it didn?t turn into a discussion of said activity, as that?s not really the issue here. She?s not pleased with her husband?s choices and they are looking at options to extract themselves from said illegal income, though it will take them some time.

My suggestion would be to contact a tax attorney. Attorneys are bound by lawyer-client privilege to not share what you?ve told them about your activities. Such an attorney would probably provide the best advice.

Your goal should be to minimize your legal liability should this end up in a bad situation. Thus, if I were you guys, I?d probably maximize my emergency fund just in case.

Q3: Interest rates and national debt
You often discuss interest rates as being cyclical and allude to a time in the future when we will again see safe investments like CDs and such at 5% APY. My concern is with national debt, being that if the Fed were to raise rates a few percent, interest on national debt could outpace GDP. In light of that, do you think we will really ever see any policy decisions but ZIRP and higher-than-reported inflation as long as the status quo is maintained? I?ve been a dedicated student to investment strategies, but I feel that the macroeconomic climate of late has made much of that knowledge obsolete. What are your considerations on the bigger picture and the savings/investment climate going forward?

I?m often frustrated when people want to make wild leaps with their finances based on their understanding of ?macroeconomics.? Galbraith and Hayek didn?t understand macroeconomics well enough to make useful predictions that actually worked all the time, so why would a layperson think that they should bet their future on the macroeconomics they?ve heard and understood?

The best step anyone can take is to minimize their reliance on the dollar and maximize their self-sustainability. Own your house and your car. Have some supplies on hand so that you won?t starve. Have a strong social network of people that you can cooperate with in a bad situation.

If you want a hedge against economic disaster, take real steps. Don?t just move investments around based on ZIRP and debt to GDP ratios.

Q4: Playing the lottery
My mother loves to play the lottery. When I go visit her each week, she gives me some money to buy groceries with, but she insists that I buy $5 worth of lottery tickets for her when I do so.

I?d like to just take that money and put it in a savings account for her so she has some money for things that might happen to her, but I?m torn. Is that the right thing to do?

The lottery is a little spike of joy in your mother?s life. She buys those $5 worth of tickets because she gets to dream a bit. It?s also likely one of her few ways she has in her life to spend money that?s not revolving around a need (keeping food on the table and a roof over the head).

Let it be. It?s $5 a week and it brings her some joy.

Sure, it?s not the most effective use of $5, but there is no one alive that makes maximal use of their money. Everyone spends some of their money on frivolous things. This seems to be your mother?s frivolous thing.

Q5: Managing financial progress
When I bought my house last August I only had around $5000 in credit card debt, $7500 on a 3.5% car loan, and my student loans of $35,000 at 5%. I was planning to wait until December to buy, but was able to get my home at 4.25% fixed 30 year for only $132k when it had previously sold for $220k 5 years ago brand new. It was a HUD home, so it needed a little bit of TLC, but long story short, I have put less than $10k into my home and it?s now better than it was brand new, with some of the additions/changes I have made (wired whole-home Ethernet, upgraded kitchen appliances, etc).

Flash forward to today: I?ve made some financial mistakes along the way and am finding myself cash poor monthly, and am worried about the money ?running out? before too long.

Overview of my finances:
$1400 credit card at 19.99% (min. monthly payment $50, have been paying over $100/month)
$1500 credit card at 17.99% (min. monthly payment $50)
$5300 credit card at 13.24% (min. monthly payment $115)
$2700 credit card at 0% (monthly payment $166, min. monthly payment $96, appliances purchased w/24 months same as cash, must be paid off by August 2013)
$4750 car payment at 3.5% (min. monthly payment $335)
Monthly student loan payments $360
Monthly mortgage payment (with PMI, taxes, insurance) $1175
Utilities in my home are split three ways, and are roughly $75/month doing a 12 month average
Water/trash, etc is budgeted at around $45/month (I don?t charge my renters and portion of this)
Total fixed monthly payments: $2371

Monthly take home salary from work is $2750
Monthly income from two renters is $700 (not including the 2/3 of utilities they pay)
Total monthly income: $3450

Current cash on hand: $1500 with no bills due

These fixed payments don?t include anything such as entertainment, gas, food, car insurance, etc.; with those things budgeted in, I estimate my expenses to be close to $3000/month.

I hate saying to myself, ?I just have to make it to September, 2013? but that?s how I feel. At that point, my car will be paid off as will my appliances, freeing up around $500/month in payments. Around that same time, I should also have the 19.99% credit card paid off (currently I?ve been paying around $100/month on it).

Now to my question (and unconventional logic): Of these things, what should I do to best free up some additional cash every month, so that I ensure that I am in the positive cash flow each month? Currently I am working to cut back drastically on my entertainment and food (non-grocery) expenses every month. I have thought that maybe I should pay off my appliances first, just to free up the $166/month. The more I?ve read back through this email, the more I think that would be a bad idea, not only because of the fact that it?s 0% interest currently, but also because paying off both of the higher interest rate cards would still net me ~$150/month in freed up money, and eliminate the interest payments from those as well.

Another potential alternative would be to sell my car, but I travel a lot for work, and need something that is reliable, gets good gas mileage, and is comfortable to ride in for extended periods of time. My ?07 Accord gets 29-30MPG highway, is very comfortable and highly reliable, plus has the built in GPS for making those trips to remote locations easier to follow. At 145k miles, I feel that the car has many years of service left, even though I?m currently putting nearly 35k miles on it annually between personal and professional usage.

You are not in a truly bad debt situation. I think the only mistake you made was buying a house before you were ready to do so, as you?re paying PMI and had to incur credit card debts to keep the ball rolling.

You have to decide what?s more important to you: the quickest route to a bigger monthly cash flow or the quickest route to a complete payoff of all of your debts. There isn?t a right answer here and different financial gurus will give you different answers.

If I were you, I wouldn?t sell off important things unless it were an emergency. Instead, I?d just keep following the path you?re on, which is a good one. Debt freedom doesn?t happen overnight.

Kidnapped Libyan Olympic Committee chief released

TRIPOLI, Libya (AP) ? The president of Libya's Olympic Committee was released Sunday a week after unknown gunmen nabbed him from his car in the capital, his brother said.

Salah al-Alam said committee chief Ahmed Nabil al-Taher al-Alam returned home unharmed and was resting. He said it was not clear why his brother was abducted or on what conditions his abductors let him go. He said they are suspected to be a criminal gang, and had interrogated his brother for only 15 minutes during his week of captivity.

Security officials were not immediately available for comment.

The abduction comes amid a wave of score-settling between rival groups in Libya's eight-month civil war that ended with the capture and killing of longtime dictator Moammar Gadhafi in October.

Dozens of former rebel groups now operate independently, often ignoring the nation's weak central authorities.

Since Gadhafi's fall, militias frequently have taken matters into their own hands and rounded up officials with ties to the ousted regime.

Al-Alam served as head of the Libyan Football Association under Gadhafi. He is known to have been friends with Gadhafi's son, Mohammed, who was al-Alam's predecessor as Olympic Committee president.

The sports official was released in the western city of Misrata late Saturday, from where he was transferred to a military base in Tripoli and was handed over to security officials. He returned home early Sunday, the brother said. Al-Alam was abducted in Tripoli and it is not clear where he was held.

Five Libyans have qualified to compete in the 2012 Summer Olympics to be held in London. A committee official said the delegation left to London Saturday.

"We're tremendously relieved," International Olympic Committee spokesman Mark Adams said. "We were very concerned. We're very happy it's come to a successful conclusion."

The interface had a habit of opening new main program windows often when I chose a new activity or a disc was inserted in a drive, even popping up the Welcome screen again.

Music
To rip an audio CD with Burning ROM, you head to the Extras menu and choose "Save Audio Tracks..." The program helpfully looked up the album and track names, and even showed the album cover art in the ensuing Match dialog, where you verify that the correct album was found. Ripping the 60 minute Buena Vista Social Club CD to 192kbps MP3 files took 2:20 minutes, compared with 2:03 for CyberLink Power2Go and 2:02 for Ashampoo Burning Studio. The default output was Nero AAC (mp4), which took 2:25 minutes. There was no indication of time remaining, though progress bars for each track made the process clear.

Burning the same music to a blank CD took (using Nero's "Ultra Buffer") took a swift 2:25 minutes, the same time it took Power2Go, and faster than Ashampoo's 4 minutes and NCH's 6:30. But the program didn't offer the music CD contents I'd just ripped to burn to a new disc. And when I chose the Copy option, the program didn't detect the music CD in the drive. Peter Gilhuly, a partner with Latham and head of its West Coast restructuring practice, said the downloadable distress dictionary arose from the words of bankruptcy professionals themselves, who have developed a language out of the scores of terms thrown around in the pursuit of rescuing a company. He calls the lingo ?colorful? yet ?efficient? and says it saves the pros time in a fast-paced industry.

?You use the shorthand because it?s a complicated language and you don?t want to spend all day repeating the words,? he said.

Still, he acknowledges that for newcomers to the profession, or even seasoned professionals practicing in a faraway jurisdiction for the first time, a global guide is indispensible.

?This, in a lot of ways, I think demystifies what sounds like a very complicated area,? he said of the app, which includes phrases used in more than 10 countries, from Sweden to Saudi Arabia.

?The Book of Jargon: Global Restructuring? is the fourth in a series from Latham & Watkins. (Other handy guides focus on topics such as project finance, European capital markets and bank finance and have garnered more than 25,000 downloads in total.) But Gilhuly thinks bankruptcy, in particular, lends itself to such a format.

?I think bankruptcy has more of its share of this kind of jargon,? he said. ?It?s complicated concepts, it?s code-based, and there?s a lot of numbers.?

Plus, the practice has grown more complex in recent years, and the speech patterns mirror that. As an example, Gilhuly cites rights offerings, which have come into vogue as a way for cash-strapped companies looking for a way out of bankruptcy to raise funds and have left a stream of complex terms in their wake.

It?s not all dense phrases and doom, though. The book also incorporates that unique animal: bankruptcy humor.

?We put some things in just for fun,? Gilhuly said.

That includes inside jokes (like the bagel entry, a nod to a venerable restructuring professional who, legend has it, once threw a bagel at someone in a moment of bankruptcy-fueled anger) and ?Star Wars? references. (Yes, C-3PO is in there.) Some entries blend the legitimate with the lively?for example, ?zombie? is slang used to describe a company so far gone it?s barely functioning, but the definition also references the classic movie ?Night of the Living Dead.?

Other phrases are just tough nuts to crack, no matter how you approach them. Take ?indubitable equivalent,? for example, a concept that played a starring role in the most recent bankruptcy issue to make it to the Supreme Court and is even the name of the American Bankruptcy Institute?s house band. And yet, it remains mysterious and ambiguous to many restructuring experts, Gilhuly said.

It appears in the Bankruptcy Code, but it?s not even defined there, he added.

Still, the Latham & Watkins attorneys who worked on the ?Book of Jargon? gave it their best shot. It?s in there right between ?independent director? and ?information circular.?

Enter Starbucks. The coffee giant is known worldwide as the leader of lattes, the king of caffeine. They are the most popular coffee retail chain in the world, and customers don't seem to be growing tired of the patented 'Starbucks experience' any time soon. But the coffee company has decided to contribute something new on their menu board. Not only are they offering up their classic Orange Mocha Frappuccinos, now they are pushing -- wait for it -- jobs.

In the American market, Starbucks is currently positioning itself as a leader in the fight against unemployment. They have launched a massive project called the 'Indivisible' campaign where they are raising money through coffee and wristband sales to provide grants for small businesses in underserved American communities. The idea is to insert money at a grassroots level, to let the people rebuild.

And Starbucks is apparently quite serious about its new endeavor, using significant corporate advertising dollars to support their cause. The company has ran full-page ads in The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal, stating in capital letters: THIS COUNTRY NEEDS JOBS. It's a bold positioning statement for any business.

At the helm of this employment movement is business tycoon and Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz, a man that Fortune Magazine named 'Business Leader of the Year' for 2011. Schultz, whose net worth is approximately $1.5 billion USD, is making it his personal mission to use Starbuck's mammoth scale for doing good. Earlier this month he issued an open letter to America on the Starbucks website. It was a call to action in a time of uncertainty, and a year where an electoral decision will undoubtedly shape the course of the near future:

"America needs to win the election more than either party does. It is time now to join together as Americans. It is time, whatever our differences, for us to strive and succeed as one nation -- indivisible."

I applaud the Starbucks Indivisible campaign for its intention to address a social issue. They are exploring the future of business, one where all successful companies will have a social or environmental cause at the core of their brand architecture. This is a step in the right direction. But the most important thing is to keep moving in that direction. A single step is not enough.

Starbucks has work to do. According to the Create Jobs for USA website, to date the movement has created 3,800 jobs. That's enough to keep a small American city afloat in a time of economic woes -- not something to scoff at. Earlier this year, The Seattle Times reported that Starbucks currently employed 149,000 people, yet the height of its employment figure was 176,000 in 2008. I'm not a math wizard, but it seems that we might still be short a couple of jobs. Which makes me wonder if this is a real solution? Or is it simply a slick marketing strategy to grab public adoration while encouraging consumer slactivism?

Big business has immense power in the ability to address the greatest social disparities of our time. What if, for the next fifty years, the battle against unemployment was the one issue that Starbucks steadfastly stood for? What if all of us coffee addicts knew beyond the shadow of a doubt that with each latte purchased, we weren't just lining the pockets of a business tycoon, but were also helping to heal a nation? That would be the biggest brand victory for any multinational corporation.

Until then, the question remains: will Starbucks save America?
