The growth of Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) Android-powered devices in the U.S. outpaced that of Apple?s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iOS in the June quarter, though the iPhone maker remains the largest single device manufacturer in the nation. According to a report from market analytics firm Nielsen, Google?s operating system now runs 51.8 percent of smartphones, while 34.3 percent have the Apple software.

However, among recent acquirers of smartphones, 54 percent said they chose an Android handset and 36 percent bought an iPhone. The Google increase is coming mostly at the expense of other platforms, with Research In Motion?s (NASDAQ:RIMM) BlackBerry trailing at an 8.1 percent share of the market and Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) Windows Phone making up just 4.3 percent.
The highest share of users in terms of device manufacturer, though, once again went to Apple with 34 percent of the market. Samsung accounted for 17 percent of all Android sales, followed by HTC and recent Google acquisition?Motorola, which made up 14 percent and 11 percent, respectively.
Smartphone adoption among US subscribers passed the 50 percent mark?in March, and reached 54.9 percent in June. New adoption momentum has remained steady, with smartphones making up?about two-thirds?of all new purchases.
Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) shares finished last week lower 1.61% on 5 trading days of action, while Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) only finished 5 days of trading lower .15%.
