Here Comes Honey Boo Boo Sets Ratings Record, Defeats Republican National Convention

Here's an idea: perhaps Honey Boo Boo should have spoken at the Republican National Convention.

No way she'd do a worse job than Clint Eastwood.

Ratings for Here Comes Honey Boo Boo on TLC reached a series high on Wednesday, increasing a whopping 30 percent from the previous edition's record-setter, as three million households tuned in to watch Honey Boo Boo and her family go to a waterpark.

Honey Boo Boo Photo

Based on the initial Nielson report, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo earned a a 1.3 rating among adults 18-49, narrowly edging coverage of the RNC on Fox News: it could only muster a 1.2 in that same time period.

What makes her show so popular, aside from the fact that it rarely mentions boring issues such as tax rates and avoids the controversy of "legitimate rape?" Said June Shannon to Ryan Seacrest:

"Our fan base tells us that when they have a bad day they can be able to watch our show and be able to get a good laugh; I honestly laugh at the show too because it is kind of funny, because we know we have fun filming it. It's just all about having fun making memories."

Raise a Green Dog!: It's National Holistic Pet Day, a great day to ...

Today is National Holistic Pet Day!

To commemorate this important day in the health and happiness of your dog (and other pets), we wanted to share a few ideas to help your dog have a more holistic life!

But first...what exactly is holistic? And what does it mean?

Many define holistic as a means of caring for and treating the whole being, while emphasizing the importance of the whole and the interdependence of its parts, rather than the separation and analysis of its parts.

What that means to us and our lives is that Mum strives to create an environment, where every part of our lives as dogs - from playing, sleeping, resting, eating, drinking, care and everyday living - works together for our health and happiness.

That means that everything we do, touch, smell, eat, drink and come in contact with is as healthy as possible; taking?preventative means to help us live a healthier, happier life through healthy eating and healthy living for the body; and creating a fun, happy, entertaining and engaging life for the mind.

Here are some tips that you can utilize to help your dog live a more holistic life:

Eating

One wise person once said, 'good food is wise medicine.' They are right! Just like for you, dogs need a plan of healthy eating, and it's one of the most important holistic paths you can practice with your dog. Learn more about healthier eating for your dog, and the variety of healthy eating choices available to help you determine what's right for your lifestyle and your dog.

Drinking

Water is the basis of your dog's life. Did you know that a dog can loose all of its fat and half of its protein and survive, but only a 10% loss of body water causes serious illness? But not all water is created equal. There are dangers lurking in much of the water that dog's are exposed to - from flouride in tap water, to giardia in puddles and streams, to chemicals from farm run off and more. Learn how to keep your dog's water safer and healthier.

Play and exercise

An active mind is a healthy mind, and creates a healthier body. That goes for dogs too! Good exercise, combined with stimulating play time can help your dog be happier and healtier! Some new (and old) ideas to help provide a higher quality of life for your dog include taking a long walk or?hike, creating great boredom busters for rainy, hot or too cold days, and learning new tricks, just to name a few! And select your dog's toys and gear with care,?checking to be sure they are free of toxins and other unhealthy matter.

Outside Environment

If you're a dog, you love the great outdoors! Help your dog by making sure your dog's outside environment is safe and healthy; and free from unwanted chemicals and toxins. Learn how you can make your lawn and yard more organic and free from harmful chemicals. And while you're out and about in the world, take special precautions to avoid highly chemically treated ?green areas, contaminated ponds and streams, and more.

Inside Environment

Our homes are where are dogs spend most of their time. Now's the time to take even more steps to make sure it's a healthy environment. Try these great green cleaning tips and recipes?for floors, toilets, carpeting, and more. And next time you are thinking of new flooring check out what we recommend for the most eco-friendly and healthy flooring?for your dog.

Healthcare

Preventative health care is another one of the most important things you can do for your green dog. Everything from a good annual checkups with blood work, to titers for checking?vaccine?immunity (instead of loading up on?vaccines?every year), to good weight management and looking at alternative healthcare options for your dog, like chiropractic,?acupuncture, massage and more. And when something just isn't right and you need to seek out professional veterinary advice, look for and support your local holistic veterinarian for help and advice for whatever your dog needs.

Remember, part of being holistic is having a positive and loving outlook on life; so get out there and celebrate this special day with your dog, you'll not only make their life more positive, but they'll return the favor in spades! Take a nice hike, a fun walk around the park, teach them a trick or two, or play a fun game together; and remember to always have fun with your best friend!

You can learn more about how to help your dog be greener and healthier in the Learn To Be Green section of our website, as well as sniff out pawsome healthy and green products from our Raise A Green Dog Partners (please support them, they help keep us bringing you the good green stuff!)

And don't furget to connect with us on Facebook and Twitter to keep up on updates, discussions, info, fun and more; to help your dog be the healthiest he or she can be!

What do Yemenis want from the West? Whitening strips, for one thing.

Correspondent Adam Baron becomes a sort of Santa Claus upon return from the United States to his new home in Sanaa, Yemen.

My life has taken a number of unexpected turns since I moved to Yemen last year, but I never expected it to lead me to a Brooks Brothers in downtown Washington, DC. But there I was two weeks ago, picking up an umbrella for one of my neighbors in Sanaa?s old city.?

For whatever reason, my neighbor Hussein, an area elder and former world-class ping-pong player, took an almost immediate liking to me. Within months of my arrival in the Yemeni capital, the 60-something father of 10 had me calling him uncle, rarely allowing me to pass by without summoning me by enthusiastically screaming ?Texas? ? an odd choice for a nickname, since I?ve never set foot in the state.

He also took a liking to my black and white-checkered Brooks Brothers umbrella. Whether due to the memory of the draconian laws of the long-overthrown Imamate, which restricted umbrella use to the upper echelons of Yemeni society, or a genuine admiration for classic American design, he developed an odd fixation with it. Having spent a few afternoons as a guest in his home, I couldn't refuse his request that I pick him up an umbrella like mine during my brief trip back to the United States last month. ? ??

It was only one of a string of things, from Aspirin to iPhones, I?ve been asked by Yemeni friends and neighbors to transport back to Sanaa. Neighborhood kids have grown to anticipate my returns from abroad, loitering by my door for my eventual appearance with a bag of candy or a box of sweets. As I passed out desserts I picked up from a famous Egyptian bakery during my lengthy layover in Cairo, I felt like some odd derivative of Santa Claus ? a diminutive Italian-American who falls from the sky to deliver sweets during the last days of Ramadan.?

As I devoured baklava and basbousa with my neighbors, I distributed the motley assortment of specific items they had requested. I finally got a bottle of baby aspirin to the older man with a heart condition who lives across the alley from me.

I also managed to get whitening strips to neighborhood teenagers, who have grown increasingly self-conscious about their teeth as they approach marrying age ? qat, the chewing of which is a favorite pastime of male Yemenis, discolors their teeth.

It took a great deal of effort to rebuff their efforts to pay me back, although I?m sure I?ll be milking free dinners from the gift giving spree for months. (I?ll admit, though, that I did make my driver give me $200 dollars for the iPhone I picked up for him, at his request.)

It often seems like conflict zones such as Yemen become merely places where violence happens, not where millions of people live. The humanity of people living there often seems forgotten.?

But as I gently grabbed my new iPad back from the crumb-covered hands of neighborhood children admiring its ?Call to Prayer? app, impressive even to non-Muslims,?and headed out into the night to track down my charmingly eccentric, Brooks Brothers umbrella-loving adopted uncle, the often dominant image of a violence-wracked Yemen ?on the brink? was far from my mind. For a few moments, at least, it was hard to see Yemen as anything other than home.

Stocks end day slightly higher in light trading

By Reuters

NEW YORK -- Stocks edged higher on Wednesday following upbeat housing data, but volume stayed light ahead of Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech on Friday.

According to preliminary calculations, the Dow Jones industrial average rose 5.19?points, or 0.04 percent, to 13,108.18. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index moved 1.20 points higher, or 0.09?percent, to 1,410.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index ended up 4.05 points, or 0.13?percent, to 3,081.19.

Daily volume so far this week has been light even for a seasonally slow period, with the trading volumes well below their daily average, an indication that market participants are reluctant to make any major investment moves ahead of the Fed chairman's speech.

Bernanke addresses a conference of central bankers in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and could announce new measures to boost growth. He is expected to stoke expectations for a third round of quantitative easing, though he may not detail the timing of such a measure.

Investors are also focusing on the European Central Bank meeting on September 6 and a host of U.S. economic data scheduled for next week, including the Labor Department's payrolls report for August.

Economic data showed pending home sales rose 2.4 percent in July, a bigger rise than had been expected and reaching their highest level in more than two years, according to the National Association of Realtors.

"We're seeing consistently good numbers out of the housing market. It's hard to get too negative on the U.S. economy with the housing market doing better than expected," said Paul Zemsky, chief investment officer of Multi-Asset Strategies at ING Investment Management in New York.

"I think the U.S. is doing pretty well today given what the rest of the world has done," he said. The Shanghai Composite index hit its lowest close since February 2009.

Other data showed gross domestic product grew 1.7 percent in the second quarter. The revised government figure was in line with economists' expectations. Last month the government estimated GDP rose 1.5 percent.

The S&P has dipped over the past two sessions, but the decline was less than 0.1 percent on both days. It hasn't closed with a 1 percent move in either direction since August 3.

The S&P 500 has been pinned in a fairly tight range over the last three weeks, finding support at 1,400 while also unable to convincingly pierce the April high of 1,422.38, which has acted as a resistance point.

Shares of customer reviews website Yelp Inc jumped 18.8 percent to $21.69, the day insiders were free to sell their holdings, in a bit of a surprise for investors.

WellPoint Inc Chief Executive Angela Braly abruptly stepped down late Tuesday following growing investor dissatisfaction with the health insurer's financial performance. Shares rose 7.9 percent to $61.94.

Friday could be a crucial day for the markets as all eyes are focused on Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke's speech at Jackson Hole. Below, Paul Hickey of Bespoke Investment Group, Jeffrey Davis of Lee Munder Capital Group, and CNBC's Bob Pisani discuss its possible effects.

Sony launches STR-DA5800ES home cinema AV receiver: true 4K output, 9.2 surround sound

DNP STRDA5800ES home cinema

Sony's just launched a high-end home cinema receiver that's finally good enough to pair up with its IFA-fresh Bravia KD-84X9005 TV or existing VPL-VW1000ES 4K projector. On top of native 4K for supported displays, the receiver will upscale standard HD movies, promising greater color, contrast and detail. For audiophiles, the system has 9.2 channels of surround sound for so-called Front High and Surround Back speakers, on top of the standard 5.1 speaker setup. A feature called "Movie Height" enables the sound to be virtually adjusted up or down to better match the screen position, and acoustics can be selected to match famous concert halls like those in Vienna or Berlin. Finally, you can take advantage of all that Hi-Fi and display tech by streaming from your laptop, smartphone or tablet through a LAN hub on the receiver. There's no availability or pricing yet, but if you're not too concerned about that money stuff, check the PR for the rest of the story.

All the Americans have to do is call and talk about different payment arrangements that they can make to pay their credit card debts back. Granted, there are a few banks who will not work with charge card account customers in this way but, most lenders will help Americans.

Option #2: Balance transfer charge card accounts: Many consumers have found balance transfer charge cards to be a great source of debt relief. This is because balance transfer credit cards allow Americans to transfer balances from high annual percentage rate charge card accounts to new low interest rate credit cards reducing the amount of time that people will be in debt and the monthly payment that consumers will be required to pay. This option however only generally works with Americans who have good to excellent credit scores.

Option #3: Settlement or credit card account consolidation: There are tons of charge card debt settlement and credit card account debt consolidation companies out there that are just waiting for new clients to take on. These programs provide Americans the most savings when dealing with charge card debt, but, the charge card savings does come at a price. Both of these programs are known to detrimentally effect the credit scores that many Americans worked so hard to get. With that said, when dealing with credit card account debt, consumers should only choose one of these programs if they feel as though it is their last option before bankruptcy.

I hope that this article has answered any questions consumers may have had about different credit card account debt relief options. For more information on this topic and topics like it, please feel free to click one of the links below!

The Millionaire Author Mindset With Stephanie Hale | The Creative ...

by Joanna Penn on August 26, 2012

Forbes recently released this years list of wealthiest authors with James Patterson again topping the list at $94 million. Janet Evanovich was the top earning female author with $33 million. I?m not aiming that high just yet but I certainly don?t subscribe to the ?poor author in a garret? myth.

moneyWriting is a joy but it is also a living. I gave up my full-time income as an IT contractor to become an author-entrepreneur so it has to pay the bills.

On a related note, China Mieville (amazing author!) closed the Edinburgh Literary Festival by raising the idea of a salary for authors, amongst other things. In the intro, I talk about why I think this is a crazy idea and why I favor a more entrepreneurial model. I also mention a new opportunity for marketing your book by sponsoring the podcast, as well as an update on my own writing progress.

stephanie haleStephanie J Hale is an author, speaker and entrepreneur. She is the founder and CEO of the Oxford Literary Consultancy where she helps authors to write, sell and promote their books. She also runs the Millionaire Author Bootcamp.

  • How Stephanie got started with writing and publishing. Stephanie was originally a journalist and later did a Masters degree in Creative Writing with Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain. The emphasis was on writing award winning novels, so Stephanie did just that, winning some awards but not earning much money. Later she worked with the Arts Council of England as a Literature Advisor and then worked at the University of Oxford as Assistant Director of Creative Writing. In 2003, she set up the Oxford Literary Consultancy and more recently has held the Millionaire Bootcamp for Authors. So she has progressed from a very academic background to a more entrepreneurial focus.
  • Along her journey, Stephanie noticed that many talented authors fell by the wayside because although they wrote fantastic books, they couldn?t sustain the lifestyle because they earned no money. So often the trappings of literary success didn?t come with the income for a full-time living. Authors could write, but not market themselves or their books. Her aim is to bridge the gap between academic writing ability and the entrepreneurial world.
  • How do authors escape the poverty mindset? You have to want to change your attitude. Art for art?s sake is fine, but if you want to earn money, or if you have to earn money, you have to change your mindset. People want different things ? a literary agent, or a film deal, or a 6 figure income. You have to step outside your comfort zone, break it down into chunks but there is also a big leap of faith at some point. You have to be prepared to push yourself and get used to being uncomfortable. When Stephanie?s marriage broke down, she had to make the money so she was forced to change her mindset and through her actions, she transformed her own life. She does have mentors who keep her on track.
  • The ebook revolution is the most exciting time for authors. On Kindle there are around 600,000 books (in UK store) with 12 million Kindles sold. Supply and demand shows there is means authors can have a viable living. Stephanie has clients earning 6 figures from Kindle income.
  • Is successful sales about volume of books or marketing what you have? There are different strategies for different situations. Volume is just one tactic and writing that fast may not be applicable for everyone. Non-fiction authors can use keyword search tool for specific niches. If you take the more entrepreneurial approach, you can use a book as the front end of your marketing funnel and then customers will be drawn into higher priced products, e.g. multimedia products, speaking or consulting. [This is my model on The Creative Penn as well.] To make $1 million, you can get 1 million people to pay $1 or 1000 people to pay $1000, or combinations of this maths. You have to decide on what you what to achieve and then find the strategy for achieving that goal.
  • On self-publishing and the traditional route. It depends on the personality of the author. Stephanie is hugely excited about self-publishing and she loves having control over the process. But some people don?t want all the hassle of self-publishing so in that case, traditional publishing may be the best route. There are a lot of frustrations with both models, and even if you get the top agent and top publisher, you may not see the money anyway. If you are excited about being an entrepreneur and you?re willing to learn PR and marketing, then go for self-publishing. You definitely need time or money. You can do it yourself or outsource to other people.
  • On the snobbery of literary fiction vs commercial, specifically in the UK where there is still an attitude that genre fiction is somehow less important. Stephanie was very keen to break this academic snootiness that she saw in her previous work. She saw the tragedy of authors falling by the wayside because of lack of money, so this snobbery doesn?t help anyone.
  • It?s important not to be precious about your book. Think of your book as a commodity, like a tin of coffee. It?s about packaging and branding. Upmarket with gold edging vs economical vs couples branding. The packaging appeals to people?s emotions. It has to catch people?s attention immediately. 74% of the buying decision is made on the cover and associated material so you need to spend time focusing on the marketing.
  • There are cycles in the writer?s life. During the creative process, your focus will be on writing and creation, but then later, your focus will be on marketing. Stephanie advises you to write a marketing plan BEFORE you write the book. If you?re going to spend all that effort and energy in writing, you?re going to want to make sure it sells.
  • To make $1 million on Kindles, we?d have to sell 500,000 at $2.99 a book (at the 70% royalty rate). As well as a mailing list, Stephanie also mentions YouTube videos even for fiction. She uses an example of an author who identified her target audience as women in their 40s, so the author is blogging and doing videos about things professional women are concerned about. Speak the language of the target market. YouTube videos are quick because you can do a 3 minute video and put it up there quickly. Blogging that is keyword rich is also recommended. I mention YA author John Green who has done amazing things with his channel. Video can help people get to know you and that can be the trigger for them to buy your book.

You can find Stephanie at OxfordWriters.com.

Please do let us know about your thoughts on money in the comments. This is an important topic for people writing for a living.

Book Review: Resonate (Nancy Duarte)

ResonateResonate: Present Visual Stories that Transform Audiences?is the second book from presentation superhero Nancy Duarte.

It is also the second book of hers which I strongly recommend you read ? immediately.

This article is the latest of a series of public speaking book reviews here on Six Minutes.

What?s Inside?

Duarte?s first book, slide:ology, addressed the challenge of designing visuals to support your message. Her second book, Resonate, addresses the more fundamental issue of deciding what your message will be. As such, Resonate will appeal universally to all speakers.

Resonate has nine chapters, covering 272 pages of deliciously beautiful writing and visuals:

ChapterPrimary takeaway
1Why Resonate?Presentations will motivate your audience to move if you match your message perfectly to their frequency.
2Lessons from Myths and MoviesThe plot structure from literature and filmmaking relates to the structure of great presentations in intriguing ways.
3Get to Know the HeroAudience analysis is critical, because they are the hero of your presentation, not you.
4Define the JourneyBecause audience members will resist, you need to use persuasive techniques to have them adopt your message.
5Create Meaningful ContentPresentation content must be more than facts; it must include meaningful ideas, stories, contrast, and emotion.
6Structure Reveals InsightsThe way you organize a sequence of ideas matters.
7Deliver Something They?ll Always RememberIncorporating a S.T.A.R. moment into your presentation makes it memorable.
8There?s Always Room to ImproveIntense preparation and rehearsal are needed for a truly remarkable presentation.
9Change Your WorldThrough presentations, we can influence the world around us, no matter who we are.

The main text is supported with copious illustrations, diagrams, and photographs. As well, detailed case studies are sprinkled throughout. It covers both theory and practical tips for crafting your message.

The Price

At the time of writing this review, you can get this book for only $15.88?from amazon.com. This is 47% off the list price. That is ridiculously good value.

3 Things I Love about Resonate

I read Resonate twice, once for pleasure (on the beach, as shown in the picture), and once before writing this review.

I could easily list 33 things I loved about Resonate, but for the sake of brevity, here are three things I liked most:

1. Numerous case studies

There are seventeen case studies woven into Resonate, stretching from Abraham Lincoln?s Gettysburg Address to contemporary TED talks. The analysis presented is insightful and captivating.

2. It?s beautiful? in an important way

When discussing the creative team led by Alfred Hitchcock, Duarte writes:

The presenter is the public persona of a single individual, but in reality, the best presentations result from the collaborative efforts of an empowered team behind the scenes.

This is true for?Resonate?as well. Nancy Duarte deserves credit as the author, but the collaborative efforts of the Duarte firm make the book beautiful. By ?beautiful?, I don?t mean simply that ?the photos were nice? or ?the typesetting was elegant?; rather, the numerous visuals add tremendous value to the book.

3. The best treatment of contrast

Great presentations employ contrast in numerous ways. No book handles this topic in a more compelling manner than Resonate. Indeed, contrast is at the very heart of Duarte?s presentation form, which contrasts between ?what is? and ?what could be?.

How could it be better?

Finding deficiencies in Resonate is a bit like using laser imaging to find imperfections in the Mona Lisa. Nonetheless, all books can be better, so here are a few ideas I suggest if I were the editor:

1. Follow a Single Example Presentation from Concept to Completion

In my review of slide:ology, I wrote:

I?d like to see one example to which the entire?slide:ology?methodology would be applied. Start by setting the context, and then show the steps to the final presentation.

I feel the same thing is needed for Resonate ? take a single presentation, start with idea formation and audience analysis, and carry through all the way to a thorough outline of material (where then the concepts of slide:ology help to develop support visuals).

There is a phenomenal diagram spread between pages 142 and 143 which depicts the entire process from idea generation to visuals. (This diagram alone is worth the price of the book.) I would have liked to see ?Chapter 10: A Complete Case Study? open with this diagram, and then proceed to walk through the process in detail for a single presentation.

Note: In the slide:ology review, I also asked for a more comprehensive table of contents. Resonate?s table of contents is perfect!

?I strongly recommend you read Resonate ??immediately.?

2. More explicit use of audience analysis in latter chapters.

The early chapters of Resonate focus heavily on audience analysis. Indeed, this is the focus of Chapter 3, and much of Chapter 4.

Later chapters, however, don?t include many explicit references to audience analysis. For example, in Chapter 5, when discussing how to select and organize material, I think there?s an opportunity here to emphasize that the audience?s needs should dictate the selection and organization. Failing to draw upon audience analysis during this phase?is an issue which troubles students in my presentation classes, and I wish Resonate would have made the connection stronger.

3. Better sorting of some topics.

I felt that the early chapters held together quite well, but some later chapters seemed a little less focussed. For example, Chapter 8 focuses on preparation and practice, but starts with twelve pages that deal with topics which are more about content creation/organization, avoiding jargon, and delivery issues. Those twelve pages have useful information, but I?m just not sure they are placed properly within the overall book.

On this theme, the chapter introductions and summaries could have been improved to emphasize unity in the chapter material.

What Other Presentation Experts Wrote about Resonate

Kathy Reiffenstein:

Resonate is being called groundbreaking and magnificent. I don?t think that?s hyperbole. [...] Rush out and buy resonate. It belongs on your bookshelf, to be consulted frequently.

Nick Morgan,?Public Words:

Duarte is one who gets the idea that speeches need the same techniques and structural devices that make movies interesting. ?Situation, complication, resolution. ?Tension and release. ?The audience?s journey. ?Good speechwriters need to know and use these concepts ? and Nancy makes them clear and usable for you.

Alex Rister,?Creating Communication:

Resonate [...] is one of my presentation bibles.

Ian Griffin, Professionally Speaking:

My one complaint with resonate is that the subtitle is too limiting. It?s far more than a book on how to ?present visual stories?; rather, it?s an extensive listing of the secrets and essential truths of the best storytellers and public speakers, whether they use visuals or not.

Brent Dykes, PowerPoint Ninja:

Resonate is a great ?strategic? design book and a worthy addition to any presenter?s library. Nancy Duarte made me think and re-evaluate my own presentation design style, which I think is a compliment to her new book.

Rohit Bhargava, Influential Marketing Blog:

Even if all your presenting is done with PowerPoint, focusing on the story instead of the slides is the real secret to being a compelling presenter and communicator. Resonate is a brilliant guidebook to help you get there.

Dave Paradi:

Is this book valuable if you are an everyday presenter? Absolutely. Look past some of the examples that may not be from the world you live in, and focus on the key ideas that are applicable to all presentations.

Olivia Mitchell,?Speaking about Presenting:

If you?re a presentation geek, you?ll want this book on your bookshelf.

Nancy?s TEDx Talk

Nancy Duarte spoke at TEDx East and gave a capsule presentation of the key ideas in Resonate:

YouTube Preview Image

Verdict

Exactly four years ago,?I reviewed?Nancy Duarte?s first book, slide:ology. In that review, I wrote:

I highly recommend?slide:ology. It is destined to become a classic reference text for presentation skills.

Resonate?deserves the same high praise. You should get yourself a copy today.?I only wish I could send copies to every?Six Minutes?reader.

Can we do to Dems in Maine what they did to us ... - Legal Insurrection

Everyone pretty much wrote off Maine when former Governor Angus King announced he would run as an independent for the seat vacated by Olympia Snowe.? Everyone understood that King?s independence notwithstanding,?he would caucus with Democrats.

King was far ahead in the polls, and then a funny thing happened.? A Club for Growth related group ran some ads actually pointing out King?s record, and his numbers tanked.? Via Marc Thiesen in WaPo (h/t Charles):

When Sen. Olympia Snowe announced her retirement last year, many Republicans wrote Maine off ? and with it their chances of taking back the U.S. Senate. At the start of July, a Portland Press Herald poll showed independent former governor Angus King with a 28-point lead over his closest rival, Republican Maine Secretary of State Charlie Summers (Democratic state Sen. Cynthia Dill came in third with 7 percent). But then the Friends of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce got into the race, launching an ad campaign that declared the former governor the ?King of Spending? and the ?King of Mismanagement.?

?When King was governor, state spending skyrocketed to $2.6 billion,? the ad declared to the tune of medieval music. ?When King left office, he left Maine with a $1 billion budget shortfall. Declare your independence from this king.?

Result: After just two weeks, King?s lead over Summers dropped 10 points.

Republican supporting groups also are running ads supporting the Democratic candidate, who has been abandoned by Democrats in favor of King:

A Republican political action committee began airing television advertisements Friday in support of Democrat Cynthia Dill?s Senate campaign.

A group calling itself Maine Freedom has purchased air time on four Portland television stations to broadcast a commercial in support of Dill, a state senator who is the Democratic candidate vying for Sen. Olympia Snowe?s soon-to-be-vacant Senate seat.

Maine Freedom?s treasurer is listed as Michael G. Adams, a partner in the Washington, D.C., office of law firm Dinsmore & Shohl. He serves as general counsel for the Republican Governors Association, according to his corporate biography?

This would be a somewhat analogous situation to what Democrats did to the Republican primary in Missouri, running something of a false flag operation to move the opposing party?s electorate.

I say good on them.? If we can hold Maine, taking back the Senate looks a whole lot more likely, even if Akin stays in the race in Missouri.

Pussy Riot copycats may face 3-year sentence in Germany

A YouTube video shows a demonstration by supporters of the Russian rock band Pussy Riot at a cathedral in Cologne, Germany.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News

Church officials at a German cathedral have filed charges against three masked activists who disrupted a Sunday mass in support of the Russian rock group Pussy Riot, the officials confirmed to NBC News.

Two days after the Pussy Riot verdict in Moscow, the copycats stormed into the mass at Cologne cathedral and shouted ?Free Pussy Riot,? while throwing leaflets into the crowd.

After less than a minute, the activists were escorted out by church wardens.

Prosecutors told NBC News that under German law, the two men and one woman could be prosecuted for the disruption of free practice of religion.

Russian court sentences Pussy Riot rockers to 2 years in prison

If convicted, they could face up to three years in prison ? compared to the two-year sentence given to their heroines in Russia.

Russian clerics forgive Pussy Riot, ask for mercy

In an interview with Cathedral Radio, the dean of the Cologne Cathedral, Monsignore Robert Kleine, said: "It is legitimate and certainly appropriate to protest the verdict ... in public [in Germany], for example in squares. But there are borders, especially when the rights of others are impaired."

"The right to demonstration cannot be set above the right to religious freedom and above the religious feelings of the congregation," Kleine added.

10 Questions With? Kira Snyder : FrontRow Lit

AuthorAdam on Saturday, August 25, 2012 ? Leave a Comment?

Front Row Lit wanted to see what makes?writers tick.? Our most recent installment of ?10 Questions With?? features author Kira Snyder

  1. Tell us a little about yourself.

Dead Letter Office is my first book, but I?ve been writing for pretty much my whole life. I currently live in Los Angeles, where my full-time job is as a TV writer on the Syfy show ?Alphas.? I also wrote on ?Eureka? and the cult hit vampire drama, ?Moonlight? ? obviously I love sci fi, paranormal, and fantasy! Before transitioning into screenwriting I was a playwright and a computer game designer, and I?ve really enjoyed getting to use all the various elements of my background in writing Dead Letter Office. I?m also an avid videogame player, newbie ukulele player, and soon-to-be bride? I?m getting married in August to a fantastic guy.

  1. When did you first decide that writing was in your future?

Right after I realized that Princess Leia wasn?t a real person. Once I understood that someone created her and gave her those great adventures, clever lines, and kisses with Han Solo, that was it ? I knew that?s what I wanted to do with my life. So thank you, George Lucas and Carrie Fisher.

  1. Describe the process of finding the right publisher for your work.

This was actually serendipity. I had been developing Parish Mail as a TV pilot and a feature when a mutual friend put me in touch with Lisa Rutherford at Coliloquy. We clicked immediately. A couple of long phone calls and one slightly boozy brunch later, we were in business on Dead Letter Office! Speaking with Lisa and Waynn Lue, Coliloquy?s other founder, I saw instantly how much fun it?d be to tell these stories through an interactive, episodic series of books. Readers get to drive the story with the heroine Celia, choosing how she solves the mystery and the emotional choices she makes. Only in this kind of interactive book can a reader shape their own reading experience. I love that freedom as a reader, and the creative challenge it poses to me as a writer.

  1. How would you describe your writing style?

Coming from TV, my natural instinct is to write in a snappy, economic style. I love quippy turns of phrase and banter, no accident since I?m a fan of Rob Thomas and Joss Whedon: Celia has the DNA of both Veronica Mars and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. On the other hand, one of the great luxuries of writing fiction is getting to take your time to set the scene and get into the characters? internal state of mind. In TV, you?re constantly under pressure to keep things short, since we have hard and fast rules for how long an episode can be. But in a book, you have all the time you need. I?ve been told that my writing is visually lush, sensuous, and imaginative, and that readers really feel that they?re in New Orleans?which I take as a huge compliment.

  1. What inspires your creativity?

Gosh, everything. Books I?m reading, music, a stray comment overheard on the street, the odd bits of research I?m doing ? getting to learn new things is one of the best side benefits of being a writer! Like most writers I have a long list of ideas labeled ?Stuff To Write One Day.?

  1. How often do you get writer?s block and how do you combat it?

While I don?t really get writer?s block ? a carryover from TV, where you have to get a script out on a strict deadline or the whole machine grinds to a halt ? I definitely get periods of not feeling inspired or not wanting to write. In those moments sometimes I usually coax myself, ?Okay, just write a page.? And then suddenly I realize I?ve written three pages. And even if it?s just one page, or one scene, and it?s totally awful, that?s progress I didn?t have yesterday, and it?s always easier to rewrite than to write. I?m also a believer in outlining. I see an outline not as a list of instructions, but rather a map? you can change on the fly how you get there, but you always know where you?re going. And knowing that keeps me moving forward.

  1. Along with praise for your art, rejection and negative criticism is inevitable.? How does that affect your focus and momentum?

Ugh, it?s hard. Writing is so deeply personal that it?s impossible not to feel hurt when someone has negative things to say about your work. I just let myself feel bad for a moment then try to let it go and move on. I often turn to Bird by Bird, Anne Lamott?s fantastic book on writing. She never fails to cheer me up with her earthy, relatable advice on dealing with rejection, envy, self-doubt, and all those other gremlins we live with.

  1. If you weren?t writing, what career path would you choose?

Computer game design, my earlier career which I still love and have never fully left ? I still consult and write for games from time to time.

  1. Please tell us a little about your next project.

The episode of ?Alphas? that I wrote will air this summer on Syfy when the show?s second season premieres, but Parish Mail Book 2 is the next book I?m writing. I?m super excited to get to put to use all I?ve learned from my publisher about what readers enjoyed in Dead Letter Office. PM2 is a little more gamelike than DLO: there are ?right? and ?wrong? clues the reader can have Celia pursue along with making personal choices for her. The book picks up right where Dead Letter Office ends, with Celia facing the dramatic new direction her life has taken, and the central mystery ? a very creepy one dating back to the Civil War ? will make her question her newfound abilities.

  1. What advice can you offer to aspiring writers?

Spend more time writing than aspiring. Finish things. Find people to read your stuff who will give you honest, constructive feedback, and be fearless about rewriting. I can?t stress that last point enough: I?m a big fan of the ?vomit draft.? Just get everything out onto the page, telling your internal editor to shut the hell up, until it?s finished. Then go back and make it great.

Ancient fossils reveal how the mollusc got its teeth

The radula sounds like something from a horror movie ? a conveyor belt lined with hundreds of rows of interlocking teeth. In fact, radulas are found in the mouths of most molluscs, from the giant squid to the garden snail. Now, a "prototype" radula found in 500-million-year-old fossils studied by University of Toronto graduate student Martin Smith, shows that the earliest radula was not a flesh-rasping terror, but a tool for humbly scooping food from the muddy sea floor.

The Cambrian animals Odontogriphus and Wiwaxia might not have been much to look at ? the former a naked slug, the latter a creeping bottom-dweller covered with spines and scales. Despite the hundreds of fossil specimens collected from the Canadian Rockies by the Royal Ontario Museum, scientists could not agree whether they represented early molluscs, relatives of the earthworm, or an evolutionary dead-end. Smith, a PhD candidate in Uof T's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and author of a study published this week in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, employed a new, non-destructive type of Electron Microscopy to reveal the new details.

"I put the fossils in the microscope, and the mouth parts just leaped out," says Smith, a PhD candidate in U of T's Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. "You could see details you'd never guess were there if you just had a normal microscope."

After examining some 300 fossils, Smith was able not just to reconstruct the mouthparts, but work out how they grew. "The fossils are squashed completely flat, which makes them really hard to reconstruct in 3D," says Smith. "I surrounded myself with micrographs of the mouth parts and lumps of plasticine, and spent weeks trying to come up with a model that made sense of the fossils."

The new observations demonstrated that the mouthparts consisted of two to three rows of 17 similarly-shaped teeth, with a symmetrical central tooth and smaller teeth on the edges. The teeth would have moved round the end of a tongue in the conveyor-belt fashion seen in molluscs today, scooping food ? algae or detritus ? from the muddy sea floor. By establishing how the teeth were arranged, moved, grew, and were replaced, Smith was able to demonstrate that they formed a shorter and squatter forerunner to the modern radula.

"When I set out, I just hoped to be a bit closer to knowing what these mysterious fossils were," says Smith. "Now, with this picture of the earliest radula, we are one step closer to understanding where the molluscs came from and how they became so successful today."

The findings are reported this week in the paper "Mouthparts of the Burgess Shale fossils Odontogriphus and Wiwaxia: implications for the ancestral molluscan radula".

Scientists Clear Path to the Fountain of Eternal Youth [Science]

Researchers at Johns Hopkins have discovered an efficient and totally safe method to turn adult blood cells "all the way back to the way [they were] when that person was a 6-day-old embryo." The discovery could be the key to cure the incurable—from heart attacks to severed spinal cord to cancer—and open the door, some day, to eternal youth. More »
