Internet Security ? always a cause for concern | Bart VPN

Don?t be complacent ? protect yourself and your information

Internet security is of increasing concern to all those who access the World Wide Web ? whether for business or pleasure. Continuous advancements in information and communication technology can cause many individuals to be anxious about online privacy and security. Many Internet users do not realise that when accessing the web, sites visited is displaying private information, in clear text, such as the users IP address, to the ISP, and even to advertisers ? this is done without the knowledge or permission of the individual.

It is this vulnerability associated with IP addresses, which has fuelled the development of VPNs, enabling users to surf and browse the Internet securely and anonymously. Other methods of anonymous surfing are available, however a VPN service is the most effective and easiest way of protecting information. Increasing numbers of companies and private individuals are turning to VPN services in order to protect themselves when using services such as online banking or even when simply browsing the Internet.

Masking of IP addresses

A VPN server will change the IP address of the user as well as encrypting information and data that is transmitted or received; this allows the individual to access the internet anonymously and securely. Many VPN services use IP addresses that appear to originate in the United States. It is possible to browse the internet anonymously when using a proxy; however, there are more advantages when using a VPN.

A VPN provides extra layers of protection to its users both just before and just after Internet traffic arrives at its server. The security offered by a VPN includes encryption and tunnelling of all data and information that is transmitted and received to its server.

VPN accounts

A VPN account is generally made up of a 128-bit, or 256-bit, encrypted tunnel between the VPN server and the user?s own computer. This encryption allows secure, anonymous connection to be made to the Internet.

Online sessions are also encrypted by the VPN, allowing concealment of online identity, thereby maintaining privacy and confidentiality ? thus allowing individuals to browse the Internet anonymously and freely without worry. A VPN account will allow various online activities to be accessed that may previously have been restricted, these include:

  • bypassing of port blocks, filters and proxies;
  • prevention of snooping;
  • bypassing of ISP imposed speed limits such as on P2P networks;
  • protecting against hackers;
  • freedom to use services such as Skype, Gtalk, ICQ, IRC or yahoo;
  • masking of an IP address with one from another geographical location;
  • unblocking of restricted websites such as Facebook and YouTube.

Anonymous browsing via a VPN can also bypass the GEO-IP blocking employed by some websites.

Reduction in fraud and ID theft

The increased use of VPNs for secure, anonymous Internet access has led to a reduction in cases of ID theft and fraud ? making the use of such a service highly beneficial. Most VPNs are user friendly as they are easy to set-up, no hardware is required, and they can be used anywhere.
